LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Now that winter is coming to an end, we have warmer temperatures coming our way and ice fishing is slowly coming to an end. I have had the pleasure of ice fishing with Garmin and it was an experience I never thought I’d do, but it was one that I look forward to doing again this coming winter. Until then, it’s time to get our boats out on thewater and continue thefishing adventures. As I have been on many fishing adventures and have lots of stories to tell – some successful, some not, but all exciting experiences with great friends and partners – we have many more adventures ahead of us and more stories and memories to create. We’ll have some new fishing products out this year that we will be sharing with you to help make your fishing experience a great one if it isn’t already. As for now, we are excited to share with you some new products that Secret Lures has came out with that will be great for your next fishing trip. We also have some new products from Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s, Sunline, SPRO, and more. Until next time, we wish you a great fishing year and great outdoors experiences!

ICE FISHING with Garmin Panoptix LiveScope

Danny Thompson from Garmin and the Walcheski brothers, John and Derek, embarked on a North American ice fishing adventure in sub- zero climates in Northern Minnesota. With a wind chill of -40 degrees on day one of their outing, the guys give us an inside look at what it’s like to fish out of a wheelhouse on the ice. “We’re up here in northern Minnesota on the west- ern side, fishing kind of a prairie pothole region lake, and it’s one of those mixed bag lakes, it has crappies in it, it has northern pike in it, it has wall- eye in it so I’m very excited to get out there and kind of see what we can get, I mean, you put your jig down and you never know what’s going to bite.” Danny continues. “This lake is known to have some giant crappies in it, up to 13-14 inches. So it should be a good time, I mean there’s a lot of fishermen out here so there’s a lot of pressure, but I think we’re going to be able to find ‘em with the Panop- tix and really get on these fish and also showcase what Panoptix can do for you out here.

We’ve got what’s called our wheelhouses, and we call themwheelhouses because they’ve got wheels on them. You can crank the house up when you’re trailering it down the road, and you can crank it down and set it right on the ice. They’ve got fur- naces in them, lights, TVs, ovens, stoves, it’s really like a camper on the ice, essentially. We’ve got our TVs going, plugged in through HDMI cables into these GPS map Garmin units. And we’re able to literally sit back on the couch and watch the fish come in on our 32 inch TVs.

I’ve got my two good buddies, Josh Walcheski and his brother Derek out here on the ice with me, and they’re probably some of the best ice fishermen that I know, they always catch fish, and they’ve really kind of helped design these Livescope and these Panoptix units, and tried to make ‘em set up for what an ice angler wants. With Livescope, it gives you so much more clarity than even Panoptix gave you. We’ve been seeing some northern pike come through the house, you can see their tail paddling as they go by. You can pick out individual fish. And it’s true to scale, so if you see a fish that’s a foot long on the screen, that fish is a foot long, unlike when you get your other marks, like on traditional nat. So Livescope is re- ally kind of the latest cutting edge thing right now, and having it in a fish house is pretty cool. So our first night in the wheelhouses was quite fun. We all jumped into my house because I’ve got the 32 inch TV set up to the 8610, we had a lot of bites, lots of bluegills, lots of small crappies, we caught a couple of nice crappies, too. Overall, a really good evening in the wheelhouse, it was fun. On the second day, we took a little bit different of an approach. We kind of left the hard houses back in the bay where we were catching a lot of those pan- fish. Wewanted to target and go after some big slab crappies and we knew they were out on the main lake, the snow is really deep out there, but we know the big fish are out here, so it’ll definitely pay off. We picked out some spots we thought there’d be some big fish, and we’re kind of on a nice point right there. Typically these crappies in this lake are actually relating to structure. So it’s a nice big un- derwater point that came out and the crappies are literally just kind of following that structure around. What we’re doing is trying to stay in front of them and follow them around as well, and so we set up on the tip of the point, we dropped in the Panoptix, we found this school, and

Seen above is Garmin’s Livescope. You can see all the crappie suspended just above the bottom. In the top left of your screen is a fish being reeled in.

A beautiful looking crappie that will make for an excellent sandwhich.

Danny and the Walcheski Brothers brave the elements while following a school of crappie.

we just followed them down to the south. This is really more like a tactical type of fishing than what we were doing the night before in the house. In the house, we were sitting there with the furnace running and we were nice and warm and just reel- ing them in one after another on Livescope. But today we’re out trying to drill holes and follow ‘em with Panoptix to get in front of the school of bigger crappies that are out here. These crappies are just so pretty, they’re so good eating, but these bigger ones here we’re throwing them back and I think that’s kind of the right thing to do, put these bigger crappies back and let them make some more crappies. That is definitely what we’re out here for. You really wanna be careful with the fish, it’s so cold out here on a day like we had fishing on the ice, you don’t wanna keep those fish out of the water too long so their eyes and fins don’t freeze up. You owe it to the fish to kind of take care of them when it’s this cold out. Of all the great technology we have, I feel like that new flasher page is one of the most exciting things. We needed to refresh our flasher screen, essentially. And make it more ice fishing friendly and more up to date, and so these guys did a lot of testing and gave a lot of great feedback on what we needed and were able to come up with a flash- er, but we also got the two side windows on each side of the flasher that you’re able to zoom in on literally just using your fingers, pinch to zoom. You can slide that whole window up and you want to target one fish, because it looks like a real nice fish on the screen, and you can zoom in within a foot of that on the one side, and I mean, target within a quarter inch of where you’re jigging that fish up or down or whatever they want. We kind of downsized from the night before and we used a small tungsten jig. And the reason that’s nice is that tungsten jig will drop really fast for you, so you know, we’re fishing deeper water, 30 feet of water, and you need a small jig to get down quick. But you also need to have the feeling of that jig

Garmin’s Danny Thompson poses with a large crappie be- fore quickly getting it back in the water.

Garmin’s Panoptix Flasher Screen is configured with the the flasher in the middle and two side windows that you can enlarge to isolate the EXACT fish you want to go after.

Using a small tungsten jig was key when fishing for crappie that were down deep.

when it’s down there, so we use a small tungsten jig. We actually were using some Sunline fluoro- carbon ice line , it’s nice to fish a braid because you get the sensitivity of it, but when it’s this cold outside. That ice just sticks to that braid and your line will get so filled up you can’t even get it to run through the guides or anything, so we’re actually fishing the Sunline Ice line, and it’s a fluorocarbon because it’s a little bit more abrasion resistance here on the ice. And it’s also, it doesn’t freeze up, which is nice. I’m fishing a six pound, I think Josh is fishing a three pound, but it gives you just a lit- tle bit more stretch with mono, but the fluorocar- bon is nice and sturdy so you can still set the hook into these fish pretty good, even in that 30 feet of water. So the quality crappies, the bigger crappies, and the more active fish were definitely in the front of the school. And so, we’d look on Panoptix where the school was, we’d run over, drill a hole, and we’d catch some of those active fish, but as soon as that school moved on, we had to keep following it to stay with ‘em, so I mean, I think by the end of the afternoon when we were done with that crappie mission, we’d probably drilled close to 75 holes to a hundred holes. It would be absolutely impossible without Panoptix to stay on ‘em today, the way they are. It’s all worth it at the end, we’re finally caught some big crappies and that’s what we set out here to do and just goes to show you what Panoptix can do, this is a lake I have never been to, these guys have only been to it a couple of times, and we just looked at the map on our lake view map, found a spot that looked good, and came out here, searched on those Panoptix, vwe’re able to look 150 feet with that Panoptix, they’d probably even be on that, I think we’ve seen some fish even farther than that. It’s always a good time when you can get out on the lake and catch some fish and whether we catch fish or not, we always have a great time out here, it’s about being with friends and just finding

100% fluorocarbon designed for ice fishing featuring low memory for better bite detection and easy handling in extreme cold conditions. Formulated with high abrasion resistance to protect against sharp ice edges.

Caught on the Garmin Virb Danny & Josh celebrate this good looking crappie.

The Panoptix ice fishing bundle will transform your ice fish- ing experience. It allows you to drill fewer holes to locate schools of fish swimming up to 100’ horizontally around you and below the ice in real time. It includes an ECHO- MAP Plus 73cv combo with a keyed assist touchscreen and 3 types of sonar: narrow beam Garmin CHIRP traditional, Panoptix LiveVü Forward and LiveVü Down.

fish and sometimes the adventure of it, you know, today we were busting drifts with the truck, the night before we were sitting in the wheelhouse and kind of hanging out and joking around with each other and you know, ice fishing’s such a fun way to spend your time in the winter, it’s cold up here, but you know, we’ve got the heaters, we’ve got the houses and the equipment to do it. I encourage people to get out and try it, ice fishing is really a fun way to spend your winters. And it’s such a fun way to kind of get out into the outdoors and enjoy all the great lakes that we have up here in Minnesota.”

So one product that Garmin has come out with recently that I’ve really started to appreciate is the new Garmin inReach units. And basically what these are is, it gives you satellite communication so that if we were happened to get into an emergency situation out here on the lake, I can actually send an S.O.S. and be able to get the attention that we need, whether it’s medical attention or emergency attention, and the ability to reach out to someone when you’re in that situation is definitely a great peace of mind. The Big Bite Baits Warmouth is a signature bait from Big Bite pro staffer Dean Rojas. Your first thought might be swimbait, but Dean designed the Warmouth to be fished in a much different style. Dean fishes the Warmouth Tex- as-rigged, but he rigs it on the flat side rather than vertically. This gives it a unique profile and action on the fall that im- itates a bluegill or baitfish. The legs and body design allow the bait to be fished sideways without spinning on the fall, giving it a natural gliding action. Also, when worked along the bottom, the WarMouth resembles a bluegill feeding on its side with its tail kicking up, making it a killer sight fish- ing bait. The subtle kicking action of the legs also make it a great swim jig trailer. Designed to be fished with an extra wide gap worm hook, three ridges molded into the flat side of the body let you skin hook the point to make it weedless and allows for better hook penetration. Dean Rojas has used the WarMouth to achieve top fin- ishes on the B.A.S.S and FLW Tour. It was his key bait in winning the B.A.S.S Elite tournament at Toledo Bend. The WarMouth was designed to be fished using a Texas rig, but the bait is rigged horizontally on the flat sides rather than vertically. This gives it a unique profile and action on the fall that represents a bluegill or baitfish. Also, when fished this way, the WarMouth resembles a bluegill feeding on its side with its tail kicking up. This makes the WarMouth great for flipping and a deadly sight fishing bait. The subtle kick- ing action of the legs also makes it a great swim jig trailer. The WarMouth is compact at 3.5” and is designed to be fished with an Extra Wide Gap Gamakatsu hook. The War- Mouth comes in 14 colors to match the forage in any body of water.

The Big Bite Baits Suicide Shad Buzzbait also features a double wire keeper to hold the Suicide Shad Swimbait firmly in place throughout multiple fish catches and a razor sharp hook that provides a superior hook-up ratio. Available in a variety of colors, the Big Bite Baits Suicide Shad Buzzbait combines two highly effective baits into one amazing fish catching lure.

Big Bite Baits pro Russ Lane is here to talk about an all- new swimbait. The B5 Line Thru Swimbait is an awesome looking bait. It provides great action underwater and can convince those big fish to bite. Learn more about the new swimbait from Big Bite Baits in this video.

BIG BITE BAITS NEKO SCREW WEIGHTS

MICHAEL NEAL ON SELECTING THE RIGHT BAIT

Simplifying tasks on the water allows you, the angler, to spend more time focused on fishing. One area where an- glers spend a good amount of their time during the day is when they tie on and rig new baits. Some of the techniques used today can be quite complicated to prepare. When it comes to throwing the Neko Rig, Big Bite Baits has worked to develop a product that helps you get to fishing faster. Check out this video to learn about the new Neko Screw Weights.

It’s safe to say each angler has a specific bait or color pat- tern in which they have a lot of confidence. For Michael Neal, when it comes to jigs and soft plastics, that color is anything that is based off of a green pumpkin pattern. No matter the conditions, Neal has full confidence in baits of this pattern. Listen as he also describes how he chooses baits based upon the water temperature.

FLIPPING GRASS MATS WITH RUSS LANE

Big bass like to hide out in heavy cover where they can ambush baitfish and other prey. For anglers, one good way to target these fish is by flipping a heavy weight and soft plastic worm. The sudden movement of an object into the mat will typically trigger a fish to bite. Watch as Russ Lane talks about fishing mats with Big Bite Baits soft plastics. Big Bite Baits pro staff member Russ Lane likes to target grass mats when searching for quality fish. On the surface, grass mats appear very complex and difficult to attack. Lane suggests targeting the irregularities in order to simplify things a little bit. Fish will position themselves on indentions or points in the grass, using these irregularities as an ambush point. Try these ideas the next time you fish shallow vegetation.

TenPoint’s NEW Nitro XRT™: Unprecedented Knock-Down Power.

TenPoint Crossbow Technologies’ New 2019 Nitro XRT is unlike any crossbow ever produced. Un- leashing speeds up to an industry first 470 feet- per-second and generating a jaw-dropping 190 Foot-Pounds of power, the ultra-smooth Nitro XRT generates 25% flatter arrow trajectory, leading to precision downrange accuracy and devastating

The Nitro XRT is engineered with a reverse draw bow assembly featuring a center-mounted riser that provides superior balance. By shifting the riser from the front of the crossbow to its center, the de- sign eliminates the “nose heavy” feel of tradition- al crossbows, making it easier to hold steady and keep the crosshairs locked on target. The reverse draw design is also more efficient than tradition- al crossbows. Drawing the string through the riser creates an elongated power stroke, which gener- ates greater speeds with less poundage, leading to a smoother, lower-vibration shot that is 3x quieter than competing models. Fueled by RX7-Cams™ and SLING-SHOT™ technol- ogy, the reverse-draw bow assembly generates the unprecedented power. Meanwhile, the assembly’s revolutionary Vector Quad™ cable technology utilizes four cables instead of the traditional two for increased strength and stability. Connecting at the cam, wrapping around the turnbuckle, and terminating on the riser, the cable system creates perfectly level cams, generating straight-nock travel and pin-point down-range accuracy.

The Nitro XRT is engineered with a reverse draw bow assembly featuring a center-mounted riser that provides superior balance.

At the bow assembly’s foundation is a lightweight CNC machined 7075-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum riser featuring the company’s TRI-LOCK™ pocket system that ensures perfect alignment between the pocket and limbs for increased accuracy. The bow assembly is mounted to a 20-inch TAC-LITE™ fluted aluminum barrel that reduc- es the weight and increases the accuracy of the crossbow. Its weaver-style dovetail is fitted with a nylon-filament arrow retention brush that im- proves arrow grip and alignment to reduce noise and vibration and improve accuracy. In addition, the Nitro XRT is equipped with the new T5 trigger, which features an auto-engaging safety and a DFI™ (Dry-Fire-Inhibitor). The combination of the new trigger and the reverse draw design make the Nitro XRT the smoothest shooting TenPoint cross- bow to date.

CROSSBOWS: Power, Speed, Accuracy Watch the Episode here!

Wade Middleton Reviews the TenPoint Crossbows Nitro XRT

In this episode of Cabela’s Deer Gear TV, we are looking at the extraordinary knockdown power, speed, and accuracy that comes from a TenPoint Crossbow. We’ll review TenPoint’s Crossbow of the Year, the Stealth NXT and also debut TenPoint’s newest and most powerful crossbow ever to hit the market the Nitro XRT. You’ll see incredible hunt- ing action showing the knockdown and accuracy of the models as well as insight on the features of both the Stealth NXT and Nitro XRT models. We’ll also then look at a comparison of the penetration power of the new Nitro XRT next to a 44 Mag hand- gun when it comes to creating wound channels. Later on, in the show, we’ll also go on two separate crossbow hunts where we’ll showcase hunting ac- tion from the field on two whitetail hunts.

Wade Middleton takes a quick look at the knock- down power of the new Ten Point Crossbows Ni- tro RDX model. He shows how much energy it has when compared to a 44 Mag and he also shows several impacts on various animals from the field while showcasing how easy it is to handle in the field. “We’ve compared it against .44 Magnums shooting through giant buckets of water to see what kind of energy we’re dealing with down range, what kind of power will be impacted in the target…because that’s what you’re looking for in a hunting situation. You want to be able to prove that power, that knock- down capability is there, that’s what you want as an ethical hunter.” – Wade Middleton

Natural down jackets and gilets are lightweight, stylish and practical, providing a superb layer of insulation. However, if untreated down gets wet, it loses most of its insulation properties which, is where Hydrophobic Down Jacket comes in. A relatively new concept, the purpose is to solve the main drawback of ‘regular’ down by treating it with a water repellent finish that means it not only resists water for longer but makes for quicker drying should it ever get soaked. Gill Hydrophobe jackets and gilets take the best elements of natural down to create an extraordinarily warm, lightweight and versatile layer that will withstand almost anything the harshest environments can muster. To further enhance wet weather performance, the lightweight outer fabric has its own water repellent treatment. Not only will they perform for longer better in cold, damp conditions, Hydrophobic down jackets are incredibly versatile. The Gill Hydrophobe Down jackets and gilets can be worn over base layers, and under any of our protective layers. Alternatively, combine the gilet with a knitted fleece for cooler evenings or re- laxing with friends after a day’s activities; the jacket can also be worn as a warm layer over a t-shirt or jumper. All Gill garments are developed in line with our athletes and tested in the harshest of marine conditions, so you can be sure they are up to any adventure. HYDROPHOBE DOWN JACKET

This Hydrophobic jacket is far more waterresistant than those using untreated down, however it is water - repellent, not waterproof. If you’re going to be out in wet conditions for a prolonged amount of time, make sure you have a protective waterproof jacket.

“The Hydrophone Down Jacket is a jacket you can wear out on the town, or on the water.“ -Dean Rojas Professionial Bass Angler

ADVANTAGES OVER REGULAR DOWN:

• Retains loft and thermal performance for longer in damp conditions

• Absorbs less water and remains lightweight for longer

• Dries quicker

REDHEAD REALITY SERIES® CRAZY JAKE TURKEY DECOY Bring gobblers into range fast by triggering their dominant instincts with the apprehensive posture and size of a young jake. Built to perfectly repre- sent the color, size, and posture of an aggressive, strutting jake, the RedHead Reality Series Crazy Jake Turkey Decoy works when other strutting de- coys don’t. At only about 70% of the size of most other strutting decoys on the market, the Crazy Jake won’t intimidate a subordinate 2- or 3-year- old gobbler. The Crazy Jake’s posture tells any adult gobbler that this adolescent is nervous and ready to tuck his tail and run. This decoy features a taxider- my-quality head and taxidermy eyes, intricate paint and feather detail, a taxidermy-grade 4” beard (can be cut to size), and a fabric jake fan.

BIG BITE BAITS TOUR TOAD BUZZ

Buzzbaits are great lures to use to catch fish. One revolution that has been made in fishing circles is that adding a toad to a buzzbait, as opposed to a skirt, greatly enhances the action of the bait. Big Bite Baits has taken this concept and created the new Tour Toad Buzz . Professional angler Mike McClelland discussed this new lure in the following video.

SPRO ARUKU SHAD CRANKBAIT

A lipless crainkbait is one of the best to use when searching for fish and covering a lot of water. SPRO pro staff member Dean Rojas relies on the Aruku Shad for these types of situations. Watch to learn more about why he prefers this bait.

HD30 WATERPROOF SOFT SIDED COOLER

What separates the ENGEL soft-sid- ed cooler from the competition is the fact that the ENGEL HD-30 is entirely welded while most of its counterparts are sewn. By welding all seams, warm air is kept out, dramatically increasing the life of the ice or ice packs inside. The welded seams ensure there will be no air or water leaks, and allow the soft-sided HD-30 to keep beverages cold for 4.5 days in 90° temperatures, according to an independent review.

The Stupid Tube™ Goes BIG Time in 2019

The secret of the Secret Lures™ Stupid Tubes™ is leaking out at a pretty steady drip these days. Three trips to the Bassmaster Classic, a BFL All American Title, and televised coverage have a way of doing that. We’re expecting 2019 to bring a flood of successful bass fishing stories and bass tournament wins. In part, because “The Secret is Out”, and in part, because of the Secret Lures™ HD Stupid Tube™ Jighead and Flippin’ Stupid Tube™.

HOW TO RIG THE STUPID TUBE ™

The new HD Stupid Tube Head is designed for pitching and flipping bigger tubes in heavy cover with heavy line and flippin’ sticks. If you’ve liked flipping tubes in the past, you’re going to love it now. Although still a 4/0 in size, the HD features a medium wire Mustad hook with more bite and less flex. It fits perfectly in the new Secret Lures Flip- pin’ Stupid Tube.

The 4.2 Flippin’ Stupid Tube : A HD Stupid Tube Head in any other tube is only half right, so we took it upon ourselves to finish up the “system.” By using our same proven recipe for hand-dipped salted tubes, we’ve come up with the ultimate flip- pin’ tube. The Secret Lures Flippin’ Stupid Tube maintains the same proportions and texture that made the Stupid Tube famous but scaled up for the HD Stupid Tube Head. Inside diameter in- creased by 50% and 1/2 inch 0f total length was added. We’ve started with four proven colors and look forward to working with customers and deal- ers to expand our color palette in 2019. If you’ve got a killer color combo you’d like to see, drop us a line, we’d love to hear about it and help make it a reality!

The 4.5 Big Dummy Stupid Tube™ : This one was born out of the testing phase of the Flippin’ Stu- pid Tube™ with Terry McWilliams and Matt McCoy. They are two of the most qualified Stupid Tube™ experts you’ll ever meet.

Watch how the Secret Lures™ Stupid Tube™ got its name.

They take tube fishing to the Ph.D. level! Every time we sent them a new batch their response was the same, “These are awesome, BUT, can you make it bigger?” That quest ended when these arrived at their doors. Although we were skeptical of a tube that size, the first trip to the lake proved them right. The Big Dummy is double the inside diam- eter of the Stupid Tube™ and closer to 4.5 inches long. It’s bulky but not long. There are times and places that a tube this size produces quality bites. Rather than shelving them, we did a limited run for folks to try out. What makes them different is that they are big and fat, but not thickly walled. The Big Dummy collapses quickly with minimal pressure and that translates into good hookups. Like the Flippin’ Stupid Tube™, we’re going to let our customers help us decide what colors to make next. For the die-hard Original Stupid Tube fans, we also took care of one of the most common requests! Lots of folks wanted to fish the Stupid Tube™ in deeper water and/or heavier current, which makes sense. We figured out how to squeeze a 1/4 ounce of lead into the 3.7 Stupid Tube™. It makes for a fat head without hindering that proven action. You can now get the 1/4 once version in 3/0 and 4/0 light wire Gamakatsu hooks. CATCHING BASS ALL OVER THE NATION

Americana Outdoors is Bass fishing all over the nation! We’re starting on the West coast on Lake Castaic where we’ll meet up with Bass Pro Shops Pro Anglers David Walker and Wade Middleton as they visit the lake for the very first time. While we’re there they talk about and share insight on fishing in a heavily pressured lake while also hearing from anglers like Clark Wendlandt, Gerald Swindle, Aar- on Martens, John Crews, Brent Ehler on choosing fishing line, tying knots and matching fishing line to the bait their fishing. After we wrap up our trips to Castaic and talking fishing line we head to the famous Sam Rayburn reservoir where we’ll join Wade Middleton as he fishes a late winter day with water temperatures in the low to mid 50’s with both a SPRO Suspend- ing McStik Jerkbait and a SPRO Aruku Shad. While we are visiting with Wade he gives us some insight of when the best days to fish are. Wade tells us about high and low days. High days are going to be the tougher days because the fish are not as ac- tive and there is very little wind, and the low days are the best days to fish. The weather is cloudy with some rain and this is when the fish are more active. Even though we fish on both high and low

days, we’ll always need to strategize the way we fish so that we can always have a fish at the end of our line. We then wrap it up with Terry McWilliams who shares his secret fishing bait called the Stu- pid Tube. With the successes of the Stupid Tube, we are expecting many exciting fishing stories and many championship successes. These lures have taken anglers to the Bassmaster Classic and have gone into winning other titles. With all the raves about the new Stupid Tube, he shares the tech- nique and how it’s helped him catch fish for years.
