LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

As we head into the winter months of 2020, our teams are wrapping up coverage of fishing events nationwide, traveling from Louisiana to Ohio and everywhere in between. We have had crews capturing tournaments for National Walleye Tour, Collegiate Bass Fishing Series, Master Walleye Circuit, Hobie Kayaks, Texas Team Trail, and IFA Redfish Tour over the past couple of months. Earlier this spring, we all wondered if we would fish any events this year, but thanks to a great team effort by the anglers, staff, and host communities the 2020 season has been a good one! Moving onto hunting, I would be lying if I did not say that I cannot wait to get out of cell and internet range for several upcoming trips. So far, we have had great success early on this season. We are hopeful that our success continues as November rolls into December, and then into January and a new year. Over the coming months, we will also be field testing quite a few new products that are going to really be exciting and we look forward to their launches. So be looking for all that and more as 2020 disappears in the rearview mirror and 2021 kicks off!

THE GARMIN ALPHA® 200i: NEXT-GENERATION TRACKING AND TRAINING FOR SPORTING DOG ENTHUSIASTS

FIRST SPORTING DOG SYSTEM TO INCORPORATE INREACH SATELLITE TECHNOLOGY Garmin® recently announced the Alpha 200i, the newest generation tracking and training system for hunters and their canine companions. Building on the legacy of its predecessor, the Alpha® 100, the new 200i features enhanced mapping capabilities; a larger, 3.5” sunlight-readable touchscreen display; six-button, easy operation of the dog tracking-focused user experience; and inReach® satellite technology, allowing for two- way messaging and interactive SOS alerts so users can focus on their dogs and the hunt. “Eight years ago, the Alpha 100 transformed how outdoor enthusiasts track and train their sporting dogs. When designing the Alpha 200i, we asked customers what they wanted in a new Alpha system. Today the Alpha 200i, with its host of new features, brings dog tracking and training capabilities to a never-before-seen level,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “Safety for hunters and their dogs has always been paramount with Garmin’s track and train systems. Now, with the addition of inReach technology to the Alpha 200i, customers can stay connected through SMS and live tracking with family and friends whether their hunt takes them to the next county or another country.” Building on the proven track and train capabilities of the Alpha 100, the Alpha 200i now has a larger, 3.5”, sunlight-readable capacitive touchscreen display for increased visibility in all conditions. The touchscreen also allows individuals to configure their setup to specific hunt application needs while displaying only the relevant information necessary to accomplish a task. Alpha 200i users can easily customize tracking and/or training functions through the handheld’s button operation, which allows for fast dog training cues and minor adjustments. Using the new “quick key”

functionality on the handheld, individuals can easily and quickly access the most important field applications based on their hunting preferences, including dog list/group management, TopoActive terrain maps to determine best hunt routes, dog training and tracking data to help keep dogs safe and moving in the right direction, or important waypoint locations for efficient and effective in- field time management.

TRACK YOUR PACK Monitor up to 20 dogs from up to 9 miles (depending on dog device) with a 2.5-second update rate. DOG LIST/GROUP MANAGEMENT Keep inactive dogs in your dog list, and manage active groups so you don’t have to add and remove dogs for every hunt. SIX-BUTTON DESIGN Use dedicated buttons for fast training cues and minor adjustments in the field.

Using multi-GNSS support and enhanced mapping systems, the Alpha 200i gives users the ability to always know exactly where the hunt takes them. Themulti-GNSS satellite network on the Alpha 200i uses more satellites than traditional GPS alone for better tracking in challenging environments. The Alpha 200i also comes preloaded with Garmin TopoActive mapping and direct-to-device BirdsEye Satellite Imagery. Users can connect the Alpha 200i to a Wi-Fi® network and download BirdsEye Satellite Imagery directly to their device for a detailed landscape view of a region or use a compatible Garmin HuntView card (sold separately in U.S. or France markets) for a more detailed landscape overview.

Whether hunting in the backwoods or on the back 40, users will feel confident knowing Alpha 200i gives a new level of peace of mind and global communication coverage through inReach satellite technology. With the 100 percent global Iridium® satellite network, users can send and receive messages, navigate their route, track and share their hunt, and if necessary, trigger an SOS to get help from a 24/7 global emergency response coordination center – directly from the Alpha 200i handheld or from a compatible device (active satellite subscription required) . For increased connectivity, users can connect wirelessly to the Garmin Explore™ app on their mobile device for additional texting and mapping needs. When paired with a compatible Garmin device, the Garmin Explore app shows real time dog tracking information, allows users to save collections of dog tracks and replay these tracks to review details of their hunt. Additionally, individuals can use the Garmin Explorewebsite and app to help manage tracks, routes and waypoints, and review statistics.

Using either traditional compass mapping or the new Pro View feature, users can locate their dogs at a glance. The system provides location updates every 2.5 seconds for up to 20 active dogs, so whether a dog is working in heavy cover or at a distance, a glance at the handheldgives individuals the ability to help pinpoint their dog’s location in near real time. The Alpha 200i can store and share more than 20 dogs in an inactive state, so users who rotate different dogs or hunt with different dog groups no longer need to add or remove dogs in the system prior to a hunt. When an individual dog or group of dogs is not in use, simply make the collar ID or group “inactive” to take it offline. The Alpha 200i is compatible within the Garmin ecosystem, so users can track their pack from the road, their wrist and other ways thanks to the wireless connectivity with products such as Garmin DriveTrack™ 71 GPS navigator, rugged fe?nix®, tactix® and Instinct® smartwatches, and other compatible devices.

TRUETIMBER VSX THE WORLD’S FOREMOST TECHNICAL CAMO SYSTEM TrueTimber’s VSX was designed using our micro and macro schematics technology, making this pattern just as effective from the top of the highest mountain terrains to the wide-open prairies and southern woodland thickets. The strategic, non- directional shapes and texturization use lights and darks working together to break up the human outline at close and long distances. The colors are madeupof natural grays, browns, andgreens found across all outdoor environments and seasons, making this pattern extremely diverse and virtually invisible to any game you’re pursuing. Check out the BRAND NEWCabela’s Instinct Hunting Clothing featuring the TrueTimber VSX here. “The True Timber pattern VSX design has proven very functional to me in several hunts already. I’ve been in tree stands in Kentucky, ground blinds in central Texas as well as out in west Texas and what I’ve seen is this pattern blends in easily all over. I’m very impressed with the color schemes of grays, brown, green and how diverse it is for any terrain and any game. I judge my hunting clothing on several key points such as how durable it will be, how functional it is, how quiet it is and finally how comofortable it is. The Cabela’s Instinct lineup is one I’ve worn for many years basically since it’s inception and I’ve always found it to fit my needs regardless of it being 100 degrees or below 30 degrees when I’m in the field. Ultimately you want your hunting clothing to perform the way it’s supposed to and the way it’s marketed to you so that at the moment of truth the last thing you’ve got to worry about is being cold, being noisy and being uncomfortable.” – Wade Middleton

THE NUANCES OF RATTLING MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE! BY WADE MIDDLETON

Deer are most active during the rut. In some cases, the deer that you’ve seen regularly in areas during the season have suddenly vanished as they make their rounds in search of does and territory to claim. Rattling is a fun and engaging way to attract those big territorial bucks. When it comes to rattling, there are varied nuances that I believe can pay off . For example, if someone is high up in a tree rattling, the sounds that they would make (the aggressive sounds, the length of it, how loud it might be) would be different, in my opinion, than how somebody might rattle on the ground in a place like deep South Texas where there are a lot more deer in that fighting mode. When I’m rattling up in a tree stand, I tend to be a little more subdued and don’t tend to rattle quite as loud. As I’m trying to attract deer, I’ll make

sounds to bring them in but not bang on the trees as much. In addition, I’m not moving my body as much, and I’m lightly rattling a lot of times to create a moderate, medium sound. However, when I’m down on the ground, and I think that massive fights are going on, the deer are rutting, and they’re coming to the antlers, I’m far more aggressive. I’m moving the angles of my antlers around, up high, down low to change the sound, which is what happens in a real deer fight. Deer don’t just stand and fight head to head and stay in one spot; their heads are going up and down, their bodies are moving, they’re spinning around, rocks are moved around, and the brush is being kicked. Therefore, I like to simulate that in a fight and if I’m hunting in a place that has big deer, I rattle really, really loud!

SOFT AND SUBTLE VS. LOUD AND AGGRESSIVE

Conversely, early in the season, a lot of the time, that’s how I want to fight or simulate a fight. I want to be a little bit lighter in my sounds and flip that switch. If I’m hunting a place with big deer, and I meanbig-bodieddeer that fight andwhen theyfight it’s two mammoths going for the new heavyweight world title, I want to rock those antlers together as loud as I can. I want to make lots of sounds; you’ll see me even kick rocks and even thrash trees at times. Because, when two big boys are fighting, that’s what’s going on. They’re not just standing there slapping each other around – they’re trying to kill each other. So keep these tips in mind the next time you’re out in the rut trying to rattle in the dominant buck in your area and we wish you the best of luck!

I think not rattling really loud can be a mistake some people make in certain situations. By that, I mean if you’re just kind of lightly tinkling the antlers, simulating a little four- or six-point fighting each other, you’re probably going to get those results. But, if you’re in a place that has big mature deer (130-150 and up class) with big necks and bodies – they fight like two heavyweights going at it, like two big linemen fighting each other. The fight of all fights out there! That’s the type of fight I want to simulate! I want to be louder, I want to be more aggressive, and I want to be able to make sounds that would mimic mature bucks fighting. I also understand that if I’m hunting in an area that doesn’t have that kind of deer, then I don’t want to make as many loud noises, and I don’t want to simulate those types of a buck fight; I want to be a little more subdued. LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! You must understand the location that you’re rattling in to be successful. I think that is one of the biggest keys. You must understand the time of year to be able to mimic the type of sounds you should make. If you’re hunting in an area where there are a lot of does, there are not as many deer fights, and the bucks are generally fairly small – you probably want to mimic that type of a sound. You want a light tinkling and light action.

HAPPY HUNTING!

LOVE IT OR HATE IT: HUNTING WITH THE 6.5 CREEDMOOR BY WADE MIDDLETON

You can really start a lot of interesting debates on socialmedia, around thecampfire, outdoor forums, wherever it may be about the 6.5 Creedmoor as a hunting round. Based on who you’re talking to there’s a very love it or hate it type feeling about this cartridge. But to me, when you pair the 6.5 Creedmoor with the right ammo and the right situation, it’s a deadly combination. Just like most of the calibers out there, if you use the right bullets in the right conditions and make a good shot, you are going to find success with it. So those people that don’t like 6.5 Creedmoor are a lot of times (I think probably more often than not) using the wrong bullet when it comes to bullet selection and or being impatient and taking a bad shot.

I recommend to a lot of people that if you’ve got a new rifle and want to know what it does best, grab four or five different boxes with four or five different bullet weights, from different companies, and go shoot it. At the end of the day of shooting, I think what you will find is which bullet your rifle performs best with. When you do that and spend the time on the range, it’s going to make you a better shooter and hunter, because you understand and now know what your gun is going to do. I think that pays off a lot. Going back to our original thought and reason for this article, when you look at the 6.5 Creedmoor, there is a tremendous number of bullets available that are designed for long-range target shooting and not for hunting. Just like any cartridge, any round, anything out there, there are limitations. The 6.5 Creedmoor (shooting the right ammo), I

Looking back I’ve had a lot of conversations where

to spend time and put that bullet where it matters to, to find the ultimate success.

Range time is SUPER important to discover which ammo performs thes best with your rifle.

Shelley Giesecke VP of Careco TV poses with her African Impala taken with the Thompson/Center Compass rifle chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. I think in the end, the 6.5 Creedmoor is an excellent whitetail deer hunting round. I think if you’re making good shots and you’re using the right kind of bullets, you’re really going to be pleased with its performance in accuracy, low recoil and being a round that you can find on many shelves. I also think it’s a phenomenal long-range target shooting rifle. I think it’s far better than a .308 Winchester based on the data and based on the things that I’ve seen out there. So, when I look at the 6.5 Creedmoor, the haters are going to hate. But I promise you, I have seen it in action on quite a few of our hunts and I’m a believer.

think it’s perfect for a lot of your light, thin-skinned big game animals like African antelope, whitetail deer, etc. It is going to be right at the lower end of cartridges I wouldprobably pick for elk, however I’ve seen it even used for and it performed flawlessly and knocked them down. But once again, I think it’s just kind of right there at that threshold and that there are better choices for elk rounds. As I look at my experiences in regard to when it came time for me to kind of settle on a bullet that I liked we had shot a lot of different ones. I also read a lot of data, looked at a lot of different reviews, and when it was all said and done I had settled on the Hornady 143 grain ELD-X round that not only performed for me accuracy wise but also in the field. What I saw after dialing in and choosing that round was that we began to get immediate knockdowns, and by that, I mean animals dropping right there in their tracks on several whitetail hunts. We also took it with us to Africa where we saw it perform in one shot kills on warthogs, kudu and impalas. I mean, it was one shot, one kill type round. However, when you talk to a lot of professional hunters over there (and we did) , they’re going to talk about the 6.5 Creedmoor is maybe not good enough for wildebeest and animals like that and larger such as Eland and Zebra - some of those tougher skinned animals. Ultimately, you have got

Going Camping?

Here’s What You Need To Know When Choosing A Cooler!

PREPARED BY OUR FRIENDS AT:

According to the 2019 North American Camping Report, over 7.2 million households have begun camping in the past five years. This has seen the total number of camping households increase to highs of 78.8 million. One of the key factors driving the increase in the number of campers is millennials starting their families and taking them for hikes. Camping is a great way to build and strengthen relationships while getting some fresh air and exercise. When camping, there are several essentials to consider. For shelter, you can use tents which are chosen by 53% of new campers or cabins and RVs which are selected by 25% and 19% of new campers respectively.

Another critical thing to carry, especially if you are going to spend time away from your campsite, is a cooler. In this regard, you have two main options; these are soft-sided coolers and hard-sided coolers. Though they both do the same job, each type is suitable for particular circumstances. As such, your choice should be guided by your specific need for the cooler. SOFT SIDE COOLERS Soft side coolers are a type of cooler that is not made of hard plastic. Their versatility makes them perfect for daily use. Whether it’s for the gym, golf course, or for a hiking excursion during your camping trip, soft-sided coolers are ideal.

Here are some of the unique features of soft-sided coolers:

LIGHT WEIGHT The exterior of these coolers is made of vinyl or fabric, which is lighter in comparison with the rotomolded plastic used to make hard-sided coolers. When it comes to size, they are small, and what you pack inside will make most of the weight. PORTABILITY The last thing you want to do when hiking or enjoying the great outdoors is to bring with you anything that limits your mobility. In this regard, small-sided coolers are perfect as their small size and lightweight nature make them highly portable. With a hard cooler, you will need a vehicle or other form of long-distance transportation to get it to your campsite. On the other hand, soft-sided coolers come with shoulder straps that allow you to carry them anywhere you go like a backpack or rucksack. STORAGE Unlike hard coolers, which are rigid, these coolers are easily collapsible. As such, you do not need a large space to store soft-sided coolers. You can just roll it up and pack it somewhere else when it’s empty.

The Engel 23 Quart High-Performance Backpack Cooler Bag

HD20 22qt Heavy-Duty Soft Sided Cooler Tote Bag (also available in 32qt size as well)

The Engel Coolers HD20 32qt Heavy-Duty Soft Sided Cooler Tote Bag (pictured above)

HARD-SIDED COOLERS On the other side of the spectrum are hard-sided coolers. These are for adventurers on long trips or visiting rugged environments.

Here’s how they are suitable for such trips:

BETTER ICE RETENTION The primary purpose of a cooler is to keep your refreshments cool and good for use for longer. Ice retention refers to the amount of time a cooler can retain ice before it melts. Whereas a soft-sided cooler can retain ice from anywhere between 2-4 days, a hard-sided cooler can last over a week. CAPACITY Hard-sided coolers are significantly larger than their softer counterparts. As such, they can carry more drinks and can also be used to pack food. With a hard cooler, you can pack enough food and drinks to last you a few days. DURABILITY The rotomolded plastic used to make hard-sided coolers, which makes them rigid, also makes the coolers more durable than soft side coolers. Therefore, if you go camping frequently and love to test yourself in the depths of nature, a hard- sided cooler is a suitable option. IN CONCLUSION When it comes to choosing a suitable cooler for your trip, it’s more about what you want to do than the coolers themselves. This requires you to plan your camping trip and all the activities you will do. Realistically, you will probably need both a hard- sided cooler to keep your food and drinks cold and fresh at the campsite and soft side coolers for when you explore the area around you.
