LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Get ready – this is our most action-packed edition yet! Our crews have been traveling all over the nation to cover everything that we are about to share with you here. Spring has turned into Summer and both seasons have been filled with fishing trips, fishing tournaments, new fishing & hunting products to check out, and taking down a few turkeys and hogs. Tournament fishing is still going strong, and this season brought record turnouts (anglers and spectators!) at the Association of Collegiate Anglers events from South Carolina to Alabama; exciting wins at Texas Team Trail events at all the best lakes in this state; and epic weigh ins at the National Walleye Tour events. If you didn’t tune into the live stream of these weigh-ins, don’t worry, our crews were there, and you can watch all the coverage streaming on Outdoor Action TV. We were also lucky enough to get out on the water with some pretty cool Pro Anglers and test out the new Ranger Boats Alpha 208, throw a few Bass Pro Shops XPS Chatterbombs (if these aren’t on the end of your line yet, you’re missing out!), and learn a few things about our favorite hooks, line, and other tools. When we weren’t on the water, we were at the ranch filling feeders with Record Rack, sitting in the field practicing our turkey calls, anticipating what we were going to see on our Stealth Cams, and dreaming about cooler temps that will let us use all our new hunting gear. This year is already half over, and we are fortunate to all be passionate about what we do; for us, the “time flies when you’re having fun” adage is proven yet again. As you’re consuming all the content on the following pages, reach out and let us know what you think, we’d love to hear from you.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR GARMIN UNIT MAPPING TO LOCATE KEY AREAS TO CATCH BASS

Watch the video here

- Defined Edges: Pay attention to the defined edges of the grass. These are prime spots for bass to ambush prey.

Bass fishing in thick grass can be challenging but incredibly rewarding. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you successfully navigate and fish in grassy areas, ensuring you make the most of your time on the water.

2. POSITION YOUR BOAT

1. IDENTIFY KEY AREAS

Proper boat positioning is crucial for effective fishing in thick grass. - Six Feet of Water: Position your boat in about six feet of water. This depth gives you a good vantage point to work around the grass without getting too tangled.

Begin by locating a large expanse of grass. Look for areas where the grass grows thick and reaches almost to the surface. -Scattered Grass Patches: These act as small islands where bass like to hide. Notice the clumps and how they form different dips and edges.

- Use Live Scope: Utilize your LiveScope to keep

track of the grass and identify potential ambush points for bass. 3. CHOOSE THE RIGHT BAIT Selecting the right bait is essential to mimic the natural prey of bass.

- Quick Reaction: Set the hook quickly when you feel a bite. This helps secure the fish before it can dive deeper into the grass. - Steady Pressure: Maintain steady pressure on the line to prevent the bass from wrapping around the grass and escaping.

- Chatterbait: This versatile lure is ideal for fishing in thick grass. It mimics various prey such as bluegill, crawfish, and shad. Experiment with different trailers and colors to match the local forage. - Different Trailers: Change up the trailer on your chatterbait to suit the season and the bass’s feeding habits. 4. TECHNIQUE FOR FISHING IN GRASS Fishing in thick grass requires a specific technique to avoid getting snagged and to effectively target bass. - Work Your Way Back: Start at the edge of the grass and work your way back, casting into the pockets and around the clumps. - Ambush Points: Focus on the dips and edges within the grass where bass are likely to be hiding. 5. REELING IN YOUR CATCH Once you feel a tug on your line, it’s crucial to handle the fish correctly to ensure a successful catch.

6. SEASONAL TIPS

Bass behavior changes with the seasons, so adjust your approach accordingly.

- Winter: Bass may be less active but still respond well to slow-moving baits. - Spring: This is a prime time for bass fishing as they are more active and aggressive. - Summer: Focus on early morning or late evening when the water is cooler and bass are more likely to bite. CONCLUSION Fishing for bass in thick grass can be incredibly rewarding if you know what to look for and how to approach it. By identifying key areas, positioning your boat correctly, choosing the right bait, and using the proper technique, you can increase your chances of a successful catch. Remember to adjust your strategy based on the season, and you’ll be reeling in bass all year round.

EXPLORING SUNLINE’S TEPA LEADER

THE ADVANTAGE OF A FLUOROCARBON LEADER

Braided fishing line is often associated with heavy cover and robust pound tests. However, its utility extends far beyond these conventional uses. A common trend among anglers is pairing braided line with a fluorocarbon leader on a spinning rod. This combination leverages the strengths of both line types, providing a versatile and effective setup for various fishing conditions.

Sunline, a leader in fishing line innovation, offers a unique tapered fluorocarbon leader that enhances this setup. The tapered design ensures greater strength while maintaining low visibility underwater, a crucial factor in not spooking fish. This evolution in leader design reflects the growing preference for braid-to-fluorocarbon combinations among anglers.

INTRODUCING THE SUNLINE TEPA LEADER The Tepa leader from Sunline is designed for seamless integration with braided main lines, whether you’re using a baitcaster or a spinning rod with fluorocarbon. The leader features two distinct ends with varying diameters and pound tests, offering versatile rigging options based on specific fishing scenarios. HEAVY-TO-LIGHT CONFIGURATION One end of the Tepa leader has a heavier diameter and higher pound test, ideal for tying braid to fluorocarbon. This configuration provides increased power and durability at the knot, essential for battling strong fish and navigating thick cover. The thinner end of the leader enhances sensitivity and action while maintaining low visibility, crucial for fooling wary fish. Alternatively, the Tepa leader can be rigged with the lighter end tied to the braid. This setup is advantageous when fishing in abrasive environments like docks or rocky areas. The thicker, more durable end of the leader withstands the wear and tear of these conditions, preventing line breakage and ensuring reliable performance. The Sunline Tepa leader exemplifies the innovative advancements in fishing line technology. Its tapered design offers anglers the flexibility to adapt their rigs to various fishing situations, maximizing both strength and stealth. Whether you’re fishing heavy cover or navigating abrasive structures, the Tepa leader enhances the effectiveness of braid to-fluorocarbon setups, making it a valuable addition to any angler’s tackle box. LIGHT-TO-HEAVY CONFIGURATION

The FG knot is strong and very small which allows it to pass more easily thru guides of a spinning rod.

The Albright Knot is quick to tie and is a fairly small knot that helps it go thru rod guides more easily.

The Double Uni Knot is an easy knot to learn that has good strength for tying a mainline to a leader. It does well with tying braided line to fluorocarbon or nylon leader and can be tied very quickly with very little wasted line.

Fishing has been around for a long time, and the tools we use for it have improved a lot. One big change recently is in fishing hooks. Companies like Gamakatsu keep making better and better hooks. Their new Nano Alpha hooks are a big step forward, offering many benefits for people who fish in both freshwater and saltwater. NANO ALPHA HOOK TECHNOLOGY IN MODERN FISHING

hook can make a big difference. Different hooks are made to work best with certain baits, helping the bait move naturally in the water and attracting more fish. For example, using a small hook with a small piece of plastic bait works better than using a big hook. The right hook size helps the bait move in a way that catches more fish. THE SHIFT FROM TRADITIONAL HOOKS TO NANO COATED HOOKS Traditional hooks have worked well for a long time, but there’s always room for improvement. The new Nano Alpha hooks by Gamakatsu are a big upgrade. These hooks are designed to be smoother, faster, and more efficient than regular hooks. KEY FEATURES OF NANO ALPHA HOOK TECHNOLOGY

WHY HOOK SIZE MATTERS Fishing hooks come in many sizes and designs for different types of fishing. Whether you’re fishing in saltwater or freshwater, the size of the

1. Smoother Performance: Nano Alpha hooks

have a super smooth surface that helps them penetrate the fish faster and deeper. This means you’re more likely to catch the fish because the hook goes in more easily. 2. Better Corrosion Resistance: The Nano Alpha coating protects the hooks from rust much better than regular hooks. This is especially important for saltwater fishing, where the water can quickly cause hooks to rust. These hooks stay sharp and last longer. 3. Affordable Quality: Despite the advanced tech nology, Nano Alpha hooks are priced reasonably. This makes them a great choice for many anglers without breaking the bank. HOW THESE HOOKS HELP ANGLERS Whether you fish in tournaments or just for fun, better hooks can make a big difference. Nano Alpha hooks are slicker and sharper, which helps you catch more fish. For example, when bass fishing in early spring, fish might bite lightly. A

sharper hook can make sure you catch the fish even if the bite is weak. In saltwater fishing, the improved resistance to rust is very important. Saltwater can be very harsh on fishing gear, and hooks that don’t rust and stay sharp are very useful. This means you won’t need to replace your hooks as often, and they’ll keep working well. CONCLUSION The new Nano Alpha hooks from Gamakatsu are a big improvement in fishing gear. These hooks are smoother, sharper, and resist rust better than reg ular hooks. Whether you fish in tournaments or just for fun, these hooks can help you catch more fish and last longer. As fishing gear continues to get better, hooks like these make sure you have the best tools for a successful fishing trip.

Sunline’s Almight sinking braided line is crafted with a high specific gravity fiber in its core, which prevents the line from floating and reduces drift and bow. This feature increases the line’s straightness, allowing for better manipulation of the lure. Compared to other braided lines, Almight is 50% heavier, making it more effective in maintaining direct contact with your lure. Available in two colors, olive and pink, this line is both functional and versatile.

ADVANTAGES OF SINKING BRAIDED LINE

1. Increased Sensitivity: When making long casts with soft plastics, such as shakey heads, ned rigs, or Carolina rigs, the Almight sinking braid provides greater sensitivity. With less line floating on the surface, there is minimal distraction or

dampening of the line’s feedback, allowing you to feel bites more distinctly. 2. Better Hook Sets: The reduced line bow and improved contact with the bait result in more effective hook sets. Whether using a Neko rig, wacky worm, ned rig, or shakey head, the sinking braid ensures quicker and more reliable hook sets, increasing your chances of landing fish. 3. Enhanced Line Management: Sinking braided line improves line management by minimizing loops and bows during long casts. As the line sinks, it stays in better contact with the bait, which translates to better control and maneuverability. This attribute is particularly beneficial for presentations that require precise line control and sensitivity.

The Palomar Knot is a strong knot that works well with nylon, braid or fluorocarbon..

The Double Clinch Knot is a good knot choice for tying a mainline to a lure or hook..

Sunline’s Almight sinking braided line represents a significant advancement in fishing line technology. Its design reduces drift and bow, enhances sensitivity, and improves line management, making it ideal for various fishing applications. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a novice, incorporating Almight into your tackle can lead to more successful fishing outings and, ultimately, more fish in the boat. Embrace the advantages of sinking braid and elevate your fishing game with Sunline’s Almight.

The Snell knot is a popular choice for tying a punching or heavy cover flipping rig. The knot is strong and when you set the hook it rotates the hook into the roof of a fish’s mouth for a better hooking ration.

AFTCO RAIN SUIT COMPARISON

When it rains, it pours. During a downpour, nothing is worse than being unprepared because it can ruin your day on the water and leave you frustrated and uncomfortable. Knowing where to start the search for your perfect fishing rain suit can be overwhelming with all the options on the market. At AFTCO, they have fishing rain gear designed for light rain, steady showers, and heavy downpours. AFTCO has its anglers covered from top-of-the-line rain suits to everyday, lightweight rain jackets.

Transformer Rain Jacket

RAIN SUITS FOR LIGHT RAIN Transformer vs. Mariner

The AFTCO Transformer Rain Jacket and Mariner Jacket are ideal for light rain with 10K waterproofing. These lightweight rain jackets are breathable to keep anglers comfortable and can handle light wind and rain on or off the water.

Mariner Jacket

Like its name, the Transformer transforms because the jacket packs itself into its right-hand pocket. The Transformer is ideal for traveling and easily stores in the compartments of your vehicle’s glove box in case of an unexpected shower. It’s made with 2.5L fabric with two-way stretch nylon, so it’s not stiff and moves with you. The Mariner is not packable, but it’s made for the seafarer. It has 3L fabric, so it resists water longer. The Mariner is made to move with you and has armpit vents to keep anglers cool and sweat-free. If you want more rain protection, opt for the Mariner because its 3L fabric resists water longer than the Transformer. Beyond that, both have Durable Water Repellent (DWR) and shock cord hood adjustments with zipper hand pockets so you can customize the fit of your rain jacket. If you prefer quick storage, the Transformer is the better option for you, and there is a matching Transformer Pant to make a complete light rain suit. Regardless of the style, both will protect you from light wind and rain. Women’s Option: For female anglers, AFTCO has a women’s cut of the Transformer Rain Jacket that offers the same features and benefits as the men’s version. MOST POPULAR RAIN SUITS 2L vs 3L Rain Suits AFTCO’s most popular rain jackets consist of 2L and 3L. The L stands for layer. A 2L jacket has two layers, and a 3L jacket has three layers. Starting with 2L, it has a waterproof membrane layer and a durable outer shell layer. The two layers are bonded together with pressure and heat. The outer layer keeps water out, while the inner polyester lining is breathable to keep anglers comfortable. The Hydronaut is a popular 2L AFTCO rain suit with a double dry cuff system, hook and loop adjustments, and a waist cinch adjustment.

increases durability. Since 3L jackets have three separate layers, they are more expensive because the bonding process is longer and requires more attention to detail. The quality of 3L rain jackets speaks for itself and will protect anglers for years on the water.

Hydronaut® Heavy-Duty Jacket

Barricade Jacket

3L rain jackets are top-of-the-line and built to withstand heavy wind and rain. They are top tier because they are the most durable, waterproof, and breathable rain jackets. A popular AFTCO 3L jacket is the Barricade. It has an outer shell, a waterproof membrane, and an inner lining. The waterproof membrane is between the lining and outer shell to keep rain out. The lining is vital for comfort because it improves breathability, is soft on skin, and

When deciding between 2L and 3L jackets, consider how frequently you’ll be in harsh weather. For example, winters are freezing if you’re a freshwater angler in the Midwest. If that’s your case, go for the 3L rain jacket because it’s the most durable. If you’re an angler in a milder climate, use the 2L rain jacket for protection. Either way, 2L and 3L rain jackets will keep you dry and warm, especially if you gear up in the Hydronaut or Barricade.

Women’s Option: AFTCO also has a women’s cut of the best-selling Hydronaut and Barricade for our female anglers.

TOP OF THE LINE SUITS Barricade vs Barricade Elite

For avid anglers regularly taking on strong winds and rains, gear up with top-of-the-line rain suits. The Barricade and Barricade Elite were tested in some of the harshest conditions anglers face, including channel crossings. From freezing cold weather to scorching heat, these light shell suits don’t have heavy insulation. Despite being a lighter material, these jackets are still highly protective.

Barricade Jacket

Barricade Jacket

The Barricade is a 3L jacket meant more for warmer weather with its 20K water resistance and 5K breathability. It’s been a staple for freshwater and saltwater pros alike. Its shell provides 30K water resistance in a three-layer suit, providing longer-lasting protection from water. It has an Aqua Guard zipper chest, hand pockets, and an adjustable Speed Vent hood to keep the strain and pressure off angler’s necks. The Barricade Elite takes the original Barricade to the next level with its 4L construction. The Elite is optimal for colder weather with its 30K water resistance and 7K breathability. The fourth

layer in the Barricade Elite is a marine-grade layer, and this rain suit was designed to hold up against the toughest conditions. On the water, you face wind and rain as an angler. When running your boat and moving to different fishing spots, the elements become harsher and require extra protection.

Even though the Barricade is a high-end suit with 30K water-resistance, the added layer in the Barricade Elite is worth the investment. Another advantage of the Barricade and Barricade Elite shell suits is versatility. Anglers can layer up in the winter to stay warm and skip the layers in the summer on warm, rainy days. With its versatility, anglers can use their Barricade or Barricade Elite year-round. Rainsuits can be an investment, but quality and durability speak for themselves. Instead of purchasing several low-level rain suits over the years, the top-tier Barricade and Barricade Elite will protect you season after season on the water. If you notice the waterproofing on your jacket is deteriorating, you can use Nikwax products. Also, check out their waterproof rundown guide to learn how to re-waterproof your jackets so they last longer. Take on a sprinkle, shower, or downpour with the AFTCO collection of rain suits, and best of luck on the water.

RANGER PRO-ANGLER ERIC MCQUOID WINS ON THE BAY OF GREEN BAY

The Bass Pro Shops & Cabela’s National Walleye Tour presented by Progressive event #3 at the Bay of Green Bay in Oconto, WI belongs to young Pro-Angler Eric McQuoid. Eric had a two-day total worth 43-14 of Wisconsin Walleye out of the Bay of Green Bay. Eric was one of the few anglers that gambled on not making a long run up north, and instead stayed relatively local- but it paid off for him and was awarded a new 2024 Ranger 620FS, plus $15,000 cash.

“This has been a crazy emotional week,” said the 2021 NWT Champion. “I came in here like a lot of anglers did thinking I would have to commit to a long run, but fortunately using a little history on this body of water I was able to find an area I knew would hold great quality fish.”

Eric shared water with his dad, Kevin, who was the Day-1 leader after weighing in 26-09. Fellow Aftco prostaff angler Drake Herd was also in the area and travels with the father-and-son duo. Drake also caught a limit that landed him in the Top-5 after day one in Oconto, WI. “Today, I just went out there hoping to fish clean and leave everything on the water. But to walk away with the victory on this body of water that I grew up fishing with my dad...it’s pretty special,” he said as he was wiping away tears. Sunday, the first day of practice, was Father’s Day celebrated across America. To end the third stop of the 2024 NWT season watch the McQuoids on stage as Eric raised his second trophy of his career made many in the crowd also have to wipe away a few tears.

Eric is also the Garmin Contingency Winner, earning him an additional $300 for being the highest finishing Pro-Angler with exclusive Garmin electronics and $200 for running a Garmin Force Trolling motor. For winning the tournament and being Ranger Cup qualified he will earn the $8,000 Ranger Cup money plus an additional $2,000 Bass Pro Shops gift card.

In total, the champ wins $127,769 in cash and prizes.

ELL ENDS THE TOURNAMENT IN SECOND

Ranger Pro-Angler Jacob ELL from Bismarck, ND recorded his first Top-5 finish of the 2024 season after catching a total of 42-02 and taking home a check worth 23,600.

To capture the win, Eric reported catching his fish on a Kalin’s Google Eye Jig targeting fish using his Garmin Livescope.

Jacob reported catching his fish using a variety of moving baits and focusing on the mud.

“Very excited to have a fish like this after the unfortunate practice I had”, said the Mercury Pro Angler. “I just feel very fortunate at tournament where a lot of anglers struggled, and I thought I was going to be one of those same pros, but luckily I fished clean and just made things happen”. The North Dakota pro was one of the only anglers to bring in over 20 pounds of walleye each day. He also captured the $250 T-H Marine bonus for being the highest finishing pro running a TH Marine Atlas Jackplate on his Ranger Boat. KOPCOK REPRESENTS CANADA FOR THIRD PLACE

“How about it ladies and gentlemen, we are bringing it home for Canada”, said the Ranger Pro-Angler. “This week I tried not to lose a leg like at the last one and just fished around like I do back home. This place really reminds me of where I grew up, and the fish are huge…. if you can get them to bite.” John was one of the few Pro-Anglers that brought in over 20 pounds to the NWT scales on Friday, which secured his third-place finish. He takes home a check worth $16,882. John reported catching his fish on a Walleye Nation Creations Death Jig.
