WYOMING WHITETAIL BY WADE MIDDLETON

Last spring while on a slow turkey hunt in Texas I was daydreaming about other hunts from the past and while in one of those dreams it dawned on me that it had been far too long since I had hunted Wyoming and made a note to change that. Upon returning home from that very slow turkey hunt I picked up the phone and called Caleb Sutton at World Wide Trophy Adventures and asked him for insight into anything new he’d found in that area it didn’t take him long to tell me of his experience at Four Horse Outfitters just outside of Giddings, Wyoming the year before. He quickly texted me a photo of a buck he’d taken (see below) and gave me details and I said sign me up I’m in. Little did I know this location he recommended was far more than just an outfitting operation.

To set the stage for this hunt (after securing dates and a tag) I began to correspond with Fonzy Has- kell who heads up the outfitting of the hunts on the property. He was very quick to reply and helpful in what to expect and how we’d hunt. Since I’d not hunted with them before, I always appreciate that type of quick and informative response. Travel wise I’d chosen to fly into Denver and drive northward to the ranch. Upon arrival there I was greeted by Matt and Anna Burch part of the family that owns the ranching and hunting operations at their house, as well as our guide Terry Walker. In addition to meeting all of those great folks I also met several other ranch hands who’d just came in from a long day working cattle. When they say working cattle there theymean it, the old fashioned way, as I was now smack dab in the middle of an operation that covers well over 300,000 acres that they hunt and work cattle on. That’s a lot of land by any body’s standards. After a big dinner and lots of talking about those various topics you tend to just ramble about at any camp, it was time to call it a day and wait for the hunt to begin.

Caleb Sutton poses with his Wyoming Buck.

When it comes to Wyoming you can expect to be on large properties that at times based on some of my other trips to the state to hunt and by that I mean big expansive areas of land that offer a wide range of hunting opportunities for Elk, Mule Deer, and Pronghorn and for me on this trip Whitetail. As we made our way across the ranch seeing the sights and talking hunting with Terry we saw big herds of both Mule Deer and Pronghorn which isn’t uncommon. When it comes to Wyoming Mule Deer and Prong- horn get most of the hunting pressure and when it comes to whitetail hunting it’s widely felt that this is an under hunted resource but if you can find those pockets of whitetail in creek bottoms, near farmland you can often find big herds of whitetail. For this hunt, I was bringing along a Thompson/ Center Venture Weather Shield model in 300 Win Mag. More than capable of long-range shots and the knockdown power to deliver what I prefer (and that’s a lethal shot at any range I would shoot) . In talking to both Caleb and Fonzy when planning the hunt, I knew we would be hunting mostly around an area that featured a large irrigated alfalfa field with the Belle Fourche River running through it framed by a backdrop of Devils Tower. To say the least I could spend hours looking at that backdrop and often found myself in the early hours of the hunt distracted by the scenery despite my guide Terry always being ready to move on as he knew more deer were always just ahead.

Terry (left) and Wade (right) head out to start their hunt. Wade carries his Thompson/Center Venture on his shoul- der and shooting sticks in hand. Terry was happy to help and carry the tripod for our cameraman Rusty.

Devils Tower is an astounding geologic feature that pro- trudes out of the prairie surrounding the Black Hills. It is considered sacred by Northern Plains Indians and indige- nous people. Hundreds of parallel cracks make it one of the finest crack climbing areas in North America.

A cool skull we found while stalking. The antlers still had some velvet on them. You always wonder what happened.

We encountered a large group of deer (mostly does) in one of the alfalfa fields on the first stalk.

One of Terry’s plans and hopes was to try stalking while staying in both shooting and camera range of the deer who were in a field we came across as well as bedded down in many areas along the river and up the canyon draws. That type of hunting with three folks is always a challenge but one I’m always up for. You’ll have to watch the show coming in 2019 to see how we did. For me after that hunt, I know now why I love hunting this part of the nation. I can promise you I won’t wait as long to go back and hopefully spend time again with the folks at 4 Horses as they know how to not only manage land but take care of those that come to hunt with them. ________________________

TOPPERS TAKE AFTCO COLLEGIATE BASS FISHING TITLE

The more time an angler spends on the water, the more knowledge they gain, and in turn the greater chances one has for success. That is the common model used for anglers to be successful at any lev- el. At Lake Dardanelle this week, freshmen anglers dominated the field. The AFTCO Collegiate Bass Open saw two teams of freshmen finish 1st and 2nd once the scales closed Saturday afternoon. Finishing in the top spot is the all freshmen pair- ing of Rudy Worley and John David Nowlin. Repre- senting Blue Mountain College, the young anglers weighed in 15.12 lbs on day two to amass a total weight of 27.62 lbs. Entering this event as the 52nd ranked school in the Cabela’s School of the Year presented by Abu Garcia, Worley and Nowlin had lofty expectations for their first ever college tour- nament. “We wanted to do good. Mainly our goal was top 20,” said Worley. They managed to ex- ceed expectations by topping a field of nearly 200 boats. The field this week at Lake Dardanelle was comprised of close to 400 of the best talent in the country. Both of the Blue Mountain College fresh- men realize the significance of this major victory.

“It’s incredible, especially since it’s my first. Since we just started our team, it’s big for our team and our school,” - John David Nowlin The pair spent the past two days on Lake Darda- nelle targeting shad. Using a one-two punch of several specific baits, Worley and Nowlin loaded the boat with fish. “We caught most of our fish on a rattle trap, but a lot of our bigger fish came off of a spook,” noted Worley. Around 12:30 PM a strong storm system settled over the Russellville area. Heavy rain pelted the anglers and air tem- peratures dropped ever so slightly. This sudden change in conditions had an instant impact on the bite. “I would say it helped. Water temp dropping a little bit more, getting them fish fired up. For the way we fished, yes it helped I would say a lot,” said Nowlin. With the change in the weather, both Blue Mountain College freshmen capitalized on their opportunity to land the winning fish.

It’s easy to get dejected when you come so close to winning but come up just short in the end. War- ren went on to state that they don’t plan on letting this one loss effect the rest of their season, “It’s going to happen eventually. We’ll get a win here in the next couple.”

Weights at the top of the leaderboard were ex- tremely close. The top three teams were separat- ed by only 0.28 lbs. Finishing just 0.13 lbs behind first were Eric Lampkin and Garrett Warren from Snead State Community College. They flipped heavy mats to total 27.49 lbs of bass. “We’re flip- ping a flipping stick obviously, 65 lb test braid. We rotate a little bit between a 1 &1/4 oz weight and a 1 & 1/2 oz weight. Flipping a beaver style bait or a craw. Just flip it in there, they’ll hit it as soon as it comes through the mat,” said Lampkin. Flipping matted grass was not a common pattern we heard on Lake Dardanelle this week, so it is likely this duo was fishing for less pressured fish. Given that roughly 200 boats competed in this tournament, low pressured areas were very key.

Representing East Texas Baptist University, Chad Poulsen and Dustin Pearcy claimed 3rd place. The duo weighed in 14.85 lbs of Lake Dardanelle bass on this rainy Saturday. Combined with yesterday’s weight, the Texas based anglers tallied 27.34 lbs for two days. Bites came early and often for Poulsen and Pearcy today. “We started out throwing re- action baits. It was on a shad kind of deal. We had our limit by about 8:30,” explained Poulsen. Once they managed a decent limit, the gameplan was to move towards the bank and target shallow wood with jigs. This proved to be a critical deci- sion. “Once we just started hitting those laydowns, I mean, we knocked out I want to say a 4.5 yester- day, and a 3.5 today,” said Pearcy. Finding ways to catch four plus pound fish was an instant path to success this week. Numerous limits of 10 pounds came to the scales. Catching one difference mak- er proved to be enough to separate a team from the rest of the pack. Lake Dardanelle provided a true challenge the past two days. Leading up to this event many anglers warned of the potential for these fish to be there one day and gone the next. One look at the lead- erboard shows this to be true for this tournament. All three of the top teams from day one dropped

By having a pattern dialed in, Snead State Com- munity College, currently ranked 130th, was around the fish all week. When the foul weather blew in, they too were near the fish when they de- cided to bite. “Today it was a tough morning. Real slow morning, only had two fish at 11 o’clock. Right before that front blew in we just started catch- ing them. Caught a four pounder, and that really changed the momentum for us,” said Lampkin. Like the 1st place team in front of them, Lampkin and Warren are both freshmen. Being new to the college fishing scene they traveled to Lake Darda- nelle both excited and confident. “We were real- ly looking forward to it. We thought we had just as good as odds as anybody else. We work just as hard. We fish just as much, and we put in our time,” explained Warren.

out of the top 10. In turn, each of the final top three moved up from 14th, 9th, and 15th respectively. Combined with the flip flop in the leaderboard, the teams were also separated by a narrow mar- gin. This made for quite a suspenseful weigh-in.

ELK HUNTING IN UTAHWITH PERFORMANCE CENTER In October’s early days of 2018, Tony Miele of Smith & Wesson Performance Center found him- self immersed in the autumn colors that were splashed across the Northern Utah landscape. In search of Bull Elk for the first time, Tony has come to Wild Country Outfitters Ranch located in the area of Ogden, Utah. “I was hunting this same ranch last year. They’ve got a lot of great animals on it. There’s probably not a better elk herd in this area than right here.” In hand, was the Performance Center’s M&P®10 rifled in the stout 6.5 Creedmoor caliber. The 6.5 Creed- moor caliber actually has more energy than a .308 caliber round at 1,000 yards, giving the operator

more knock-down power at long distances, which is good to have when taking on a 700lb Bull Elk. The first morning of the hunt begins. As Tony and his guide David start their trek, they can already hear the elk start to bugle. “It was like they were tearing up the airwaves, it was unbelievable!” Tony said. The game plan was to hike along an embankment until the wind was in their favor. Then start slowly descending and pick apart where to go. While they were glassing, a couple of cows entered into the mix. David made a few calls to calm them down and the cows settled in and milled around the

valley. Soon after, Tony and David a bull coming in to check things out. It was awesome to see a bull, but this one particular 4x4 elk was too young but pretty to look at. When Tony and Davide start to move further down the hill, they came across another bull. This 5x6 was too busy tearing up a tree to even notice them. They studied the bull for a while to make sure that it was a shooter but Tony decided to pass as his heart was set on a 6x6. “I tell you what, it was a really good day today. We had a lot of encounters this morning. The weather was absolutely perfect. couldn’t ask for anything better! We probably ended up doing a 20-mile hike this morning.” said Tony as he recapped the first-morning hunt. FOUR-CYLINDER OUTBOARD DIY WINTERIZATION

Yamaha offers a popular line of four-cylinder four- stroke outboards that are used in a wide range of installations in both fresh and saltwater all over the world. From pontoons to center consoles, bass boats to work skiffs and even water taxis, they are great performers and real workhorses. The most popular are the 90, 115 and 150-horsepower mod- els and many are used in climates where they are taken out of service for the winter months. While we always recommend having your engine winterized by a certified Yamaha dealer if possible, these engines are designed to make the process easy enough for owners to do the job themselves.

Watch the Americana Outdoors episode on ice fishing here.

I’ve always said Wade didn’t wade fish, and Wade didn’t ice fish much. But Wade does wade fish, and Wade now ice fishes! So this is a pretty epic adventure for me in all honesty. I traveled up to Minnesota with my good friend Steve Pinnaz, we’re getting ready to knock this snow off our our boots, take our Ya- maha Viking out, and go out to drill a few holes. But the main thing that’s got me the most excited about this is an opportunity to play more with Garmin’s PanOptix. I first fell in love with PanOptix when it came out and I had a demo model and I’m fishing up on a boat ramp and I make a cast and I see everything happening live and I didn’t know anything about ice fishing at that time but I thought people looking through the hole in those ice, this is gonna be a revolutionary game changer for those just like it is everybody else. But I haven’t had a chance to get up and actually experience it. So we’re ready to go out on this body of water and I understand we’re gonna be targeting crappie and perch and maybe even catch a pike or two. I don’t know really a whole lot about ice fishing but, what I do know is I’m gonna get out and have a brand new experience while also learning a little bit more about all this live action fishing you can do with Panoptix. We’re on about a 250, maybe 270, acre lake that’s sort of a bog stained, not a real deep lake, it’s sort of a classic, older, eutrophic lake where it goes gradually into a main lake basin, softer bottoms, darker water. But these are the waters that are great pan fish, bass, and big pike waters. And today we’re lookin for, blue gills and pan fish. ICE FISHING WITH GARMIN PANOPTIX BY WADE MIDDLETON

You know, as I look back, there’s a lot of firsts in life. Looking back to the first blue gill I ever caught I threw a little red and white bobber on a rock and the bobber went down rigged with a night crawler and a perch smashed it and I reeled it in. I was a little kid and I ran home to my Mom and Dad and said, “Wow, check this out!” Here I am, you know, 50 years later and I’m like, “Wow, check this out!” That was my first fish in the ice and they were about the same size, ironically enough. I drop it down there and everybody’s kind of excited about it and I’m setting the hook and you know it’s a, this is a social event and that’s what’s really cool about this ice fishing. A lot of times fishing up in this part of the world is very social. The Garmin PanOptix is a great choice for this type of fishing, I mean when you look at the screen, you actually can see that fish just swim all the way back down to the bottom right there. You can watch your bait go down, you can see them react, come up off the bottom, you can watch everything go down. Then you still have the sensitivity of obvi- ously the bite when you’re holding your rod in your hand. There’s no words that truly put what you get to see in this live type of a fishing situation.

Preloaded with industry-leading LakeVü HD maps that cov- er more than 17,000 U.S. lakes, the echoMAP CHIRP 73cv includes more than 13,000 HD lakes with 1-foot contours shoreline to shoreline – two times more than the compe- tition. Like all Garmin chartplotters, the echoMAP CHIRP 73cv is known for its easy-to-use interface that allows for customized combination screens, so anglers can easily ac- cess flasher, map, Panoptix views and more.

2018 YAMAHA MEDIA EVENT IS NOTHING SHORT OF A SUCCESS

The Yamaha Outdoors Media Event has become a time honored tradition at our deer camp for the past several years. It begins on the opening weekend of the general season in Texas where we and represen- tatives of Yamaha are hosts to our invited guests. Writer’s from the Outdoor and ATV industries come out for several days of hunting and to get hands-on experience from the latest and greatest ATVs and Side-By-Sides from Yamaha. This year we had Jessica Nyberg (top) and Emily Kantner (middle) in our camp. Both stunning outdoor writers for their respective companies, both Jessi- ca and Emily were eager to experience what Texas had to offer. We also were honored to have AMA Mo- torcycle Hall of Famer Randy Hawkins (bottom) in camp with us. An avid hunter with 73 AMA National race wins, 7 AMA National Enduro Championships, 13 ISDE Gold Medals, and 2 time silver medalist in his career, Randy was all smiles as he and others shared in the experiences that this event has to of- fer. Jessica, Emily, and Randy were all successful in har- vesting their own Whitetail Bucks (along with a few hogs). Stay tuned as we will showcase their hunts on a future episode of Americana Outdoors!
