LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Winter is quickly fading away and spring is in the air! That means trees will be blooming soon, turkeys will be gobbling, and the fish are spawning. All of that equals a lot of reasons to go outdoors and the Careco team has certainly been doing that! We’ve been duck hunting in Arkansas, deer hunting in Texas, and ice fishing in Minnesota. Not to mention hitting the trade show circuit with stops at trade shows like ATA, Shot Show, and the Miami Boat Show. Looking ahead, we’ve got trips to Africa, coverage of nearly 30 fishing tournaments, and a lot more as we get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

Duck Hunting with Garmin

When people think of duck hunting, one of the first places that come to mind is Arkansas. In early January, we joined Rehan Nana from Garmin International in Brinkley, Arkansas, for a multi-day duck hunt with On the Deck Outfitters. We came to Arkansas for a few different reasons. One, we wanted to check out the fantastic waterfowl hunting Arkansas is known for, but also we were looking forward to seeing the dogs in action. Glenn Scarborough, Vice President of the Hunting Retriever Club arranged this whole hunt and said he was bringing his dogs. To see the incredible dog work in person is just as amazing as the hunt itself! Another reason we were down here is Garmin is known for having so many different products. But for outdoors people, one of the things that they really closely associate Garmin products with is their dog training products.

Garmin Delta SE

Delta SE handheld is a lightweight, screen-free remote trainer that leverages a simple, three button operation. Individuals can choose tone, continuous, or momentary correction settings using dedicated buttons on the handheld. A tactile dial on the top of the handheld is used to quickly change between 10 different stimulation

Recently Garmin just launched the Delta SE, a really simple and easy-to-use remote trainer. The

levels to meet the dog’s temperament and the training situation, as well as an auxiliary setting to change the tone button to a vibration setting. The palm-sized handheld weighs only 3 ounces, making it small enough to slip into a pocket when not in use or light enough to be clipped to a lanyard. Glenn Scarborough (Hunting Retreiving Club) and Kevin Redman (On the Deck Outfitters) loved using it on this hunt. At times the birds weren’t committing as close as we wanted them to. So we had to take a little bit longer shots occasionally. At one time, it turned into a 350-yard retrieve. Luckily, those collars we had running on the new Delta SE, have a half-mile range, so we were able to correct the dogs when needed. That’s one of the really great things about an e-collar, is that it allows for communication from the handler to the dog in those off-leash situations and hunting situations where the dog is 350 yards away. Sure you have whistles and everything else, but if the dog is not responding accordingly, you can use that e-collar, and then the dog can focus their attention back on you and can send them where you need them to go.

It just served as a reminder that whatever you love doing in the outdoors, Garmin has a product for that.

On the first day, we were going after speckled belly goose and it was everything we could have asked for! Almost immediately after shooting, we started having birds coming in and Kevin shot the first bird. When it got back to the blind, it turned out to be a collared, banded, speckled belly! That’s a once in a lifetime bird, and we’re pretty sure it’s already at the taxidermist because you don’t want to let that one get away! We can’t wait to share the rest of the action from this hunt! So be sure to follow us and Outdoor Action TV on social media and be on the lookout for this epic waterfowl adventure!

Multiple Garmin products were used on our hunt! People often associate Garmin with one singular product, but Garmin has an ecosystem of products that work hand in hand to maximize your enjoyment out in the field. Besides the Delta SE, the Garmin Fenix and Instinct crossover smartwatches along with the handheld GPS devices made for a fun time knocking down birds.

NEVER SETTLE FOR LESS V8 POWER

YAMAHA INTRODUCES UPGRADED 450-HORSEPOWER XTO OFFSHORE OUTBOARD

NEW XTO OFFSHORE 450 To help meet the extreme electrical demands of today’s larger boats, the Yamaha XTO Offshore 450 now boasts more charging power, featuring a three-phase, simultaneous charging system that delivers an incredible amount of net amps at low rpm, where it’s needed most. Using Phase Angle Control (PAC) componentry to create a super-strong magnetic field, XTO Offshore 450 models produce up to 96 net amps per engine in neutral – plenty of power for today’s popular, high-demand devices such as gyro stabilizers, air conditioning and sound systems. The Phase Angle Control charging system on the new XTO Offshore 450 is so powerful, it can even eliminate the need for an on-board generator. The system also prioritizes charging to the starting batteries, keeping them charged and ready for action at all times.

Yamaha Marine kicks off 2023 with new product offerings including an updated XTO Offshore outboard which delivers greater convenience, enhanced technology and 450 horsepower. Featuring the same 5.6-liter of big block displacement and long list of features as the original XTO 425, the updated XTO 450 improves upon the powerful platform that changed the offshore boating game. “The XTO 450 allows boaters to enjoy the convenience and ease of operation associated with the XTO line – in addition to more torque and power,” said Ben Speciale, President, Yamaha U.S. Marine Business Unit. “In addition, Yamaha’s esteemed F200 and F150 DEC and Mechanical outboards now feature integrated electro hydraulic steering for the 2.8L DEC models and integrated hydraulic steering for the 2.8L and 2.7L mechanical models. Helm Master EX also gets new features that take boat control to a new level in 2023. In a nutshell, these new products all work to elevate boating experiences for customers.”

Every XTO Offshore 450 comes equipped with Yamaha’s exclusive TotalTilt® feature for faster,

to engage the under cowling Steering Control Unit and to control the hydraulic pump, tucked neatly into the bracket, outside of the boat. Boats equipped with electro-hydraulic steering models offer smooth, responsive power steering that’s fully compatible with the complete Helm Master EX system, including the Full Maneuverability Joystick package. The compact construction of integrated Electro-Hydraulic Steering also provides more bilge, splash well and transom space than conventional steering systems. Also new for 2.8-liter F200 and F150 DEC models is the addition of Yamaha’s TotalTilt feature for faster, easier engine tilting (see details above).

easier engine tilting. When enabled, it allows complete tilt up from any position with a simple double-push of the “UP” trim/tilt button, or full tilt down (until trim ram contact) by the same double push of the “DOWN” trim/tilt button. A warning horn sounds just before and during these operations. Movement and the horn can be stopped anywhere in between by pressing the tilt button again. New raised chrome graphics on the sides, a re-styled panel in back, a new flush-mounted manual flush connection up front and hidden external wiring near the bracket add to the premium look of this powerful outboard. There’s also an optional built-in propeller light (rather than transom mount) that illuminates when using Helm Master® EX SetPoint® features. New XTO EC® propellers are now available for applications where propeller ventilation may be an issue due to the power and torque of XTO Offshore outboards. Yamaha also adds a 27-inch pitch to its XTO OS® line of propellers for lighter weight XTO applications that have the available wide-open throttle rpm to potentially drive more top speed. YAMAHA F200/F150 INTEGRATED STEERING MODELS Yamaha’s F200 and F150 DEC and Mechanical outboards now feature a newly designed look and integrated steering. Available in Yamaha’s traditional gray, the modernized F200 and F150 outboards bring new delight to boating. Integrated Electro-Hydraulic Steering: 2.8-Liter F200/F150 DEC Models This plug-and-play electro-hydraulic steering system uses less rigging component space. The electric helm employs steer-by-wire technology The new Yamaha XTO Offshore 450 will become available starting in the spring of 2023.

Integrated Hydraulic Steering: 2.8-Liter F200 & 2.7-Liter F250 Mechanical Models

Featuring the same new streamlined look as the Electro-Hydraulic Steering models, these outboards combined a conventional hydraulic helm and lines with an integrated hydraulic cylinder. Simple in design yet offering all the space-saving, premium benefits of integrated steering, new 2.8-liter F200 and 2.7-liter F150 mechanical models offer a fresh look and smooth, precise non-powered control. Available for single and twin outboard applications, the new integrated hydraulic steering system propels one of Yamaha’s most popular outboard families into the next generation of enhanced boating experiences. The new Yamaha F200/F150 Integrated Steering models will become available starting in the spring of 2023. HELM MASTER EX UPGRADES Helm Master EX now includes an improved, space-saving Digital Electronic Control (DEC) design with increased functionality and new trim and lighting options, the availability of integrated bow thruster control, and a new joystick with new functionality and trim and lighting options. With the addition of the recently introduced joystick only control station, Helm Master EX continues to offer the most premium boating experience. The new Digital Electronic Control binnacle delivers a new level of boater convenience and console space savings. Now equipped with integral Power and an All Start/Stop switch directly on the unit, this binnacle eliminates the need for separate Power and All Start/ Stop switches on the console for both main and second stations. The new Digital Electronic Control grip echoes the soft tech grip used on Yamaha’s popular Helm Master EX joystick. To further enrich the boater experience, customers can also choose between optional black trim or traditional chrome trim to customize the binnacle to taste.

The new joystick is now available with the same optional black trim as the new binnacle, to match a console fitted for the sleek, black look. Boaters also have the ability to customize the look of the console with new joystick trim and nine new LED light color options including: Blue, Sky, Mint, Green, Yellow, Red, Sakura (which means “Cherry Blossom” in Japanese), Purple or White through a simple adjustment in the CL5 or MFDI-equipped MFD. Yamaha also introduces integrated bow thruster control through the Helm Master EX joystick. When activated, the integrated bow thruster is an on-demand, self-activating feature that works in concert with the Helm Master EX joystick to enhance lateral movement and pivoting by automatically engaging the bow thruster in variable speed to match operator input. The bow thruster automatically compliments SetPoint® functions and helps keep the boat on track when using autopilot functions. Available for twin and triple engine configurations, operators can selectively activate this feature to integrate power and operation of the bow thruster and Helm Master EX system through the joystick. Independent bow thruster control remains possible by simply using the conventional bow thruster controls at any time. Boaters can now access full maneuverability with Yamaha’s Joystick Station. Accompanied by the CL5 gauge, Emergency Stop switch, All Start/Stop switch and a newly designed harness, the Helm Master EX Joystick Station reaches new heights in functionality using a minimum of space. Boaters now have access to all joystick and SetPoint Full Maneuverability functions from a location away from the main helm, which is helpful when pulling boats into slips, steering on the-fly while chasing a fish or circling a favorite fishing hole.

The new Yamaha Helm Master EX upgrades will be available in the spring of 2023.

WENDLANDT WINS AN EXTRA $2,500 FROM YAMAHA

Clark Wendlandt has been a pro angler for 30 years, so when he noticed intense fishing pressure among fellow Elite Series competitors in massive Lake Okeechobee’s northern waters, he opted to make a long run south to have productive waters largely to himself.

Michael Neal Reviews the Gamakatsu G Finesse Feathered Treble Hook Based largely on the input of the late great Aaron Martens, the G-Finesse Feathered Trebles feature either white or chartreuse premium feathers and complementary tinsel, hand selected by Martens to tempt even the most finicky fish. The G-Finesse Feathered Trebles feature TGW (Tournament-Grade Wire) construction, which is thinner, stronger and sharper than the standard wire. That means anglers will use fewer of them while ensuring better hook up percentages as the fishing day goes. To complete the job, they come with a Nano Smooth Coat finish that makes penetration even easier. Add them to any fast-moving lure to create a fluid appearance or to lures that demand pauses so the motion will continue in place.

SPRO FLAPPIN FROG

Part of the Essential series, the SPRO® engineers worked diligently to create the Flappin Frog, ex tending the company’s footprint in the world of topwaters with a frog meant to be buzzed. The skirted legs have been replaced by paddle tailed appendages that can be buzzed across the sur face or retrieved in a stop-and-go pattern. They’re deadly over thick cover and in open water alike. The frog is made of elastomer material, which makes it float and stretch. They’re deadly over thick cover and in open water alike. As with the other SPRO frogs, a vital part of the Flappin’ Frog’s effectiveness is that it’s built around a Gamakatsu Nano-Coated Superline Double Frog Hook that gives a weedless presen tation as increases hookup percentage without risk of bending out. The frog’s body is built of a floating elastomer material, so when a fish strikes half-heartedly or misses the lure, you can stop it in its tracks and tempt it to come back. The Flappin’ Frog makes a ruckus, whether re trieved at rocket speed, or slowly walked back. The legs kick and buzz with only the slightest forward movement, and savvy anglers can mix up their retrieves until they find out what bass want

on a particular day.

The Flappin’ Frog will initially be offered in 11 of SPRO’s proven frogging colors so any angler can imitate any forage.

Bassmaster Elite Series angler Clifford Pirch is known for his prowess with finesse techniques, especially his mastery of the drop shot. Pirch, along with other Western anglers, have been utilizing custom hand poured worms for years to entice fish under pressured conditions. Big Bite Baits tapped into Clifford’s decades of knowledge to help them develop the Cliff Hanger 5 Worm and the Ramtail 35 along with providing input on the other new Scentsation shapes, and he is extremely pleased with how the final product has turned out. “It’s been awesome working with Big Bite Baits on their new lineup of Scentsation soft plastics. The new scent formula has a strong drawing power for both smallmouth and largemouth and causes the fish to hold onto the bait longer resulting in more fish catches,” says Pirch. While scented plastics have been a known commodity for smallmouth for quite some time, Pirch is equally excited about its effectiveness on largemouth. “I’ve gained an enormous amount of confidence during the development process of the Scentsation line of baits on how effective they are on largemouth. The willingness of largemouth to bite these new baits has been an eye opener for me, and I am looking forward to utilizing them in largemouth scenarios as much as I am for smallmouth. When you can combine the characteristics of good hand poured plastics and an awesome fish attracting scent you have a serious player, and Scentsation is just that,” Pirch concluded.

2022 Conservation Report

Every year through our 10% Pledge to Protect and Conserve, AFTCO and the Shedd Family contribute at least 10% of company profits towards fishing conservation, protecting our resources, and ensuring future generations have access to a sustainable fishery. Our largest contributions in 2022 were to the following longstanding conservation partners: Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute (HSWRI), Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), Center for Sportfishing Policy (CSP), International Game Fish Association (IGFA), FishAmerica Foundation, Captains For Clean Water, and B.A.S.S. Nation. In 2022, we donated $426,465 in cash contributions through the 10% Pledge. Additionally, AFTCO donated approximately $400K in product and contributed employee time to support causes we believe in. Below we have highlighted three projects that were new in 2022, each receiving $25,000 from AFTCO. IGFA Great Marlin Race

Recreational anglers, armed with cutting-edge satellite tag technology, become citizen scientists and deploy tags on the billfish they catch. These tags transmit data to researchers who learn more about billfish biology and how the fish interact with their habitat. Understanding where these animals go and how they utilize their habitat provides invaluable data to scientists and resource managers to help ensure long-term billfish conservation. The IGMR has fundamentally changed the way that scientists, anglers, and policymakers understand billfish.

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources AFTCO contributed to the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, helping stock 300,000 largemouth bass into the Ohio River, Kentucky River, and several other rivers and reservoirs across the state of Kentucky.

North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the North Carolina B.A.S.S. Nation We have partnered with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) and the North Carolina B.A.S.S. Nation to improve bass habitat. AFTCO recently sent its first of four annual $25,000 checks to the NCWRC which will be used toward developing an aquatic plant propagation greenhouse. This new facility will help produce the specific types of vegetation needed to improve bass habitat in North Carolina waters and will potentially increase the NCWRC’s vegetation production by 400-500%.

How Does AFTCO Determine 10% Pledge Partners & Projects?

The basic buckets for our 10% support fall into these categories: fishing conservation advocacy, saltwater habitat, freshwater habitat, fish hatcheries, protecting public fishing access, youth fishing engagement and education, clean water, scientific research, and fish tagging. Some of AFTCO’s donations are project-based, and some go to support the overall mission of our partners.

How Are Donations Accounted For?

Our 10% Pledge model dictates that the more successful our business is in a year, the larger our contribution. AFTCO’s annual donation goal is equivalent to at least 10% of total company profits as represented on company financial statements. In 2022, the Peggie Shedd Marine Trust made a $50,000 donation on behalf of the Shedd family who own AFTCO.

The Value of Donated Product and Time Is Not Included in This Total

AFTCO often provides support through the donation of product and time. In 2022, we estimate that we contributed approximately $400,000 in product to support our partners, disaster relief, and charities. Additionally, AFTCO staff donates a considerable amount of both personal and employee time towards conservation and sustainability efforts, including volunteering at fish hatcheries, CCA events, and cleanup events. AFTCO Chairman Bill Shedd has spent over 400 hours a year on conservation and fishing access issues for 40+ years.

FISH WITH FORCE

HIGH-POWERED Force trolling motor has the power to move you from spot to spot more quickly and stand up better to winds and currents — and it’s still whisper quiet. QUIET ABOVE AND BELOW THE WATER The ultraquiet motor doesn’t scare fish and is nearly undetectable to sonar, so it won’t fuzz up your sonar screens with static. ROBUST AND EASY TO USE The Force trolling motor is rugged and durable, easy to deploy, and easy to retract and stow with dual gas springs. It’s backed with a 3-year warranty and a limited lifetime warranty on the shaft. By welding all seams, warm air is kept out, dramatically increasing the life of the ice or ice packs inside. The welded seams ensure there will be no air or water leaks and will allow the soft sided BP25 to keep beverages cold for 3.5 days, according to an independent review. The BP25 boasts an outer shell composed of durable 840 denier fibers, which provide maximum strength and abrasion resistance. The exterior is laminated with a Thermal Plastic Urethane (TPU) film, adding another layer of strength and puncture resistance. The cooler has 1-inch of closed-cell foam insulation, preventing air from passing through it and improving the thermal range of the cooler.

HUGHES & FRANKLINWIN TXTT SEASON OPENER ON SAM RAYBURN RESERVOIR

The 2023 Bass Pro Shops & Cabela’s Texas Team Trail presented by Progressive kicked off the season on legendary Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Anglers were greeted by frosty boat decks, and air temperatures in the 30s at take-off. After a long day of bright bluebird sky conditions, water temps in the mid 50s, and little wind, Marshall Hughes and James Franklin brought a five-fish limit to the scales, totaling 28.06lbs. In reward for their efforts, the duo walked away with $51,795 in cash and prizes, including a new 2023 Nitro Z18 with a 150hp Mercury Marine motor. “We covered history today and ran a lot of areas we knew would be holding big pre-spawn largemouth in [Sam]Rayburn,” said Triton boat owner Marshall Hughes. “A big key to our success today was using forward-facing sonar to locate fish relating to pre-spawn areas on brush piles. Once we found fish wanting to react, we relied on a Rat-L-Trap ScopeStick in the Cajun Pearl color to catch most of our weight. Also, throughout the day we were able to mix in throwing a lipless

crankbait and a swimbait to catch other keepers.”

One other key to Hughes and Franklin’s success was upgrading their jerkbait technique to using Short Shank EWG Gamakatsu Treble Hooks and fishing 14lb Sunline Shooter fluorocarbon. “I am so fortunate to be partnered with Marshall and be able to compete with him in Texas Team Trail events,” Franklin said. “We fish this circuit because there is a boat giveaway at each event and with the championship being held at Choke Canyon, we really want the opportunity to be there.” The team took home several contingency prizes, including Triton Gold ($8,000) Mercury Marine ($1,000). The team also reeled in the Big Bass honors and was awarded a new Power-Pole Pro Series II unit. The 2023 Bass Pro Shops & Cabela’s Texas Team Trail presented by Progressive returns to Sam Rayburn Reservoir on March 25th.

For over two decades, Stealth Cam has been the pioneer of cutting-edge trail camera technology, delivering high-quality still and video captures with reliability that exceeds industry norms. Now, Stealth Cam further refines the cellular camera segment with the introduction of the all-new DECEPTOR cell camera. Unlike conventional cellular-based trail cameras, the new Stealth Cam DECEPTOR merges two network carriers — AT&T and Verizon — into a single unit. The camera comes with SIM cards pre-installed for both carriers and includes an auto detect feature that senses the best available signal and selects that carrier to maintain network communication. With this dual-band capability, the DECEPTOR is better able to overcome changing signal propagation and to maintain that critical link between the camera and the user’s mobile device. Along with this dual network capability is the ability to deploy the DECEPTOR’s ON DEMAND function. Working through the Stealth Cam Command Pro App, users can send a command through the app to the DECEPTOR to acquire near-real-time still and video imaging. Now, hunters can check their target zone any time, anywhere for local weather conditions and game presence before entering the area. As for imaging and capture performance, the DECEPTOR leaves nothing on the table. Users can choose to record sharp and detailed still images from 4MP to 40MP and take high-resolution QHD 1440P video with audio. A 36-piece 940nm NoGlo LED array offers a detection and flash range out to 80 feet. Coupled with a lightning fast 0.4-second trigger speed and a selectable 5-second to 180-second recovery timeout, the Deceptr ensures you’ll never miss the action. HME PRESENTS THE CELL CAM SIGNAL BOOSTER

You found a killer deal on Stealth Cam, Muddy or Wildgame Innovations cellular cameras and couldn’t wait to get them up and running in your hunting area. While they connect, maybe the reception is not as ideal as you had hoped. Even with today’s proliferation of cellular transmission networks, there is no guarantee that a strong and stable signal is available where you need to place your camera. Now, Hunting Make Easy (HME) comes to the rescue with the all-new Cell Cam Signal Booster. The Cell Cam Signal Booster is an auxiliary antenna designed to work with all Stealth Cam, Muddy, and Wildgame Innovations cellular camera systems. Featuring a rugged, weather-resistant housing that can be rotated on an included steel mount for maximum signal strength, the Cell Cam Signal Booster improves both signal strength and range by up to 50-percent when compared to a cell camera’s native antenna. A lengthy 10-foot weather- and “critter-resistant” cable easily connects the antenna to the cell camera. This allows you to place the antenna well above the camera to optimize line-of-sight reception and transmission. A sturdy cinch strap secures the antenna mount to multiple-size trees. Compatible for use with AT&T and Verizon networks, the Cell Cam Signal Booster requires less power to establish a stable signal than conventional cell camera antennas. This translates to longer camera battery life and saves money by reducing battery swaps.

CORN WON’T CUT IT. MINERALS HELP PRODUCE SERIOUS RESULTS! Throwing corn out isn’t enough. Deer require different nutrients at various times of year. Mother Nature can’t always keep up. That’s why supplementing with a mineral has become such an important practice for professional game managers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. If you want to see a healthier herd and monster bucks, then BAM, here you go!

Irresistible Berry Aroma: Deer can smell this from miles away. Why let those monster bucks stay roaming around on someone else’s property? Entice them in and keep them coming back! Flavor Deer Can’t Resist: The smell draws them in, but the TASTE keeps them coming back for more! BAM ® includes a proprietary nutrient formulation that delivers a unique and consistent blend of ingredients that ensures maximum palatability and consumption. Improved Antler Production: Phosphorus is the most limiting major mineral in antler production due to low levels found in native forage. BAM ® is heavily fortified with trace minerals at levels found to help improve antler production and support overall herd health. Increased Water Consumption: Water is the most limiting nutrient for deer. BAM ® has higher levels of salt to encourage more water consumption.

IT DOESN’T GET ANY EASIER! Just open up the bag of Record Rack ® Big Antler Mineral ® supplement, pour and BAM! Place mix directly on the ground or in mineral feeders. Place mineral near trails, rubs or watering spots. When fed on the ground, dig a hole or trench and cover mineral with 4-6 inches of soil. Or, simply pour mineral on a rock or log close to trails and feeding areas.
