LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

With Fall being one of our favorite time of the year, it’s also one of our busiest times. We have had the pleasure to go out to Kansas for the opening day of the Muzzleloader sea- son, which was filled with lots of excitement and patience. Our annual Yamaha Media Event just finished up and as always, we had a blast educating first-time hunters, shar- ing the experience of their first whitetail deer, and showing off the Yamaha Side-By-Sides that are new for 2020. Last but not least, the iconic helmet that I always wear when riding also got an up-“grayed” as seen in the picture. So look forward to that and all the adventures that went down in an upcoming episode! In this edition, we also have our Holiday Gift Guide, which is packed with a lot of new products that are perfect for the hunter or angler on your list this season. On the fishing side, the Association of Collegiate An- glers held their AFTCO Collegiate Bass Open with Snead State coming out on top, which is all covered in the recent Rapala #WeAreCollegiateBass Podcast Episodes, so make sure you give those a listen. We look forward to continuing this hunting season to fill our freezer for the holidays as I am sure you are all making that a goal as well. Happy Hunting!

GARMIN EXPANDS FLAGSHIP CHARTPLOTTER LINEUP WITH NEW GPSMAP PLUS SERIES

Garmin announced the GPSMAP Plus series , the latest addi- tion to its flagship GPSMAP lineup of premium multi-func- tion displays (MFDs) that brings increased engine inte- gration and OneHelm™ third-party integration across the full line. These intuitive features are essential for making the boating experience more automated and fluent at the helm, while also eliminating the need for multiple control displays and devices. “ We’re excited to bring a full-boat integration solution across our entire GPSMAP line with the introduction of the Plus series, offering even more choices and options for boaters . ” “ The GPSMAP Plus series brings Garmin’s superior inte- gration capabilities to some of our best-selling GPSMAP chartplotters, known already for their cutting-edge fea- tures and built-in conveniences, ” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “ We’re excited to bring a full-boat integration solution across our entire GPS- MAP line with the introduction of the Plus series, offering even more choices and options for boaters. ” Building on the popularity of the GPSMAP 7×2/9×2 and 12×2 Touch series, the Plus lineup maintains all the exist- ing features, and offers significantly enhanced integration capabilities like J1939 engine integration and compatibil- ity with OneHelm™, an exclusive feature that simplifies

control and customization of the boat’s most crucial systems to one master source – the Garmin MFD. For the first time, the GPSMAP Plus series brings this capability to a 7- and 9-inch display, providing added convenience, control and security onboard. Since launching this innova- tive HTML5 platform designed for third-party companies in 2018, systems and technologies from 16 industry brands offering lighting, stabilization, digital switching and more have been integrated into OneHelm™, which is supported across the entire GPSMAP Plus series. The processing power found in the GPSMAP Plus series has also been improved to provide a premium user experience across the entire network, so map drawing speed will be faster and all other sensors like radar, sonar and multime- dia will benefit from the increased performance. Available with preloaded cartography for coastal or inland waters, the new GPSMAP Plus units feature built-in BlueC- hart® g3 charts or LakeVü g3 maps, Garmin’s latest car- tography with integrated Navionics® data and built-in Auto Guidance1, a technology that instantly searches through relevant charts to create a suggested route based upon the user’s desired depth and overhead clearance. For the most detailed data, customers can also add BlueChart g3 Vision and LakeVü g3 Ultra accessory cards or downloads for ac- cess to Garmin’s

high-resolution relief shading that combines color and shadow to bring an entirely new level of detail to the ocean floor and lake bottom, now offering coverage for the en- tire continental U.S. coast line and more than 150 lakes, respectively. Right out of the box, users have access to some amazing sonar capabilities too. The “xs” Plus versions support 1kW CHIRP traditional sonar, ClearVü scanning sonar and Pan- optix™ all-seeing sonar, including the Panoptix LiveScope™ System, and the “xsv” Plus models also include support for SideVü scanning sonar (transducers sold separately). Thanks to built-in Wi-Fi®, it’s easy to take advantage of the free all-in-one Garmin ActiveCaptain® mobile app that cre- ates a simple yet powerful connection between a compat- ible mobile device and a GPSMAP Plus. Use the ActiveCap- tain app to access, update and purchase maps and charts from the OneChart™ storefront on a mobile device anytime, and reference the ActiveCaptain community for marina and other points of interest details, access to Quickdraw™ Community data and more. Active Captain also provides smart notification directly to the plotter/combo, over-the- air software updates, off-vessel planning capabilities and so much more. Available in a range of sizes to accommodate nearly every boat and budget, the GPSMAP Plus series is available with a bright, sunlight-readable 7-, 9- or 12-inch intuitive touch- screen display. All offer full-network support for the shar- ing of sonar, maps, user data, cameras and more among multiple units, and NMEA 2000 support for connectivity, in- cluding autopilots, digital switching, weather, FUSION-Link, VHF, AIS and other sensors. The new GPSMAP Plus series will be available in Q4 2019, with suggested retail prices ranging from $899.99 to $2899.99. For more information, click here.

Experience unparalleled coverage and detail with preload- ed BlueChart® g3 coastal charts and LakeVü g3 inland maps featuring integrated Garmin and Navionics® content and Auto Guidance technology.

Built-in Wi-Fi® connectivity pairs with the free all-in-one mobile app for access to the OneChart™ feature, smart notifications2, software updates, Garmin Helm, Garmin Quickdraw™ Community data and more.

THE NEXT GENERATION OF HUNTERS Wade’s annual Yamaha Whitetail Diaries youth hunt has arrived, Steve of Yamaha along with his two boys, Landon and Callen, are here for the next few days to simply en- joy the outdoors and to hunt whitetail deer. Last year Steve brought his oldest son Landon on his first deer hunt where he harvested a mature doe and was able to contribute to filling the family freezer. This year, Landon and Steve have their sights set on a buck while Callen gets to share in the adventure and is introduced to the world of hunting. be movement, and you count on these deer not caring too much about that. You know the big mature ones are prob- ably going to be a bit more skittish or even a mature doe than the other deer that are in and out of there. But it was great to get everybody together and experience it all. Real- istically we do a lot of the things that regular hunters won’t. We go in later and we stay shorter because of these guys. It’s not to give them less of a chance, it’s to make it more fun and have them keep doing it and want to do it more.

“You know one of the funniest things about youth camp is, you get a lot of first-time shooters. They’ve never han- dled a firearm, they don’t know what a safety is, they don’t know what muzzle control is, and start them out with a 22. It’s great practice... You still want to go through all the same safety stuff, with hearing protection, eye protection for them and kinda get that acclimation of handling a fire- arm.” - Wade Middleton Once the boys got quality time on the range shooting not only the T/CR22 but the Thompson/Center Venture cham- bered in .243, it was time for them to load up the Yamaha Viking VI and go out on their first sit. Hunting with kids has its own set of unique challenges, you have low expectations as far as being good hunters. You know you’re not going to be quiet, you know there’s gonna

The last thing you ever want to do is get in with a kid on an all-day sit and he’s just hating the entire thing going out of his first hunting trip. So we cater to them, we tailor it to them both in camp and in the blind. Ideally, they have

a good time even when they’re sitting. Although you can start to tell pretty quickly when they’re getting bored and their attention span’s waning and it’s time to call the ride back out so we can get back into camp. Overnight the temperatures plummeted to the mid-thirties so the guys decided to move to a different a box blind to help stay a little warmer and not have to deal with mother nature as much. The first deer arrived before the sun fully rose and Landon took interest in a tall forked buck. He and his father Steve both agreed that was the buck they wanted. The buck didn’t stay around for long and nothing else came into the area that excited them as much as the forked buck so, another trip in the Viking to go back to camp for break- fast, more range time, and prepare to go after the buck in the afternoon. Watch the video below for the rest of the video has Landen hunts for his first-ever buck!

A MUZZLELOADER IN KANSAS Whitetail hunting is something that’s been in my blood for years and I’ve dreamed of harvesting deer of all sizes in every state that I can with every legal means that I can. One of those states that’s has always captivated me is Kansas thanks to hit’s history of producing big deer both body weight and antler size so after not having been there in a while I decided it was time to put in for a Kansas Muz- zleloader tag as I knew if I drew I’d have time during that September window to schedule a hunt.

After getting notified I’d been drawn for units 4 and 5 it was time to start planning my hunt with the assistance of Worldwide Trophy Adventures. Based on their insight I settled on hunting an area near the Cheyenne Bottoms outside of Great Bend, Kansas. This area of Kansas is well known for producing big deer and there are several quality deer hunting outfits in the area. In fact one hunter I spoke with had hunted that area 12 of the past 15 seasons for the changes at a giant Kansas buck. In preparation for the hunt I had been shooting the recent- ly released Thompson/Center Impact!SB muzzleloader rigged with a Cabela’s Scope designed for muzzleloaders.

I’d spent several trips to the range dialing it in and was feel- ing very confident with my 1 inch three shot groups to 150 yards which is great for a combination like I was shooting that would be priced around $600.00 As excited as I was my good friend and camera guy Jeff Reynolds was as equally excited as he’d not hunted or filmed in Kansas so our talks about the hunt and planning we’re pretty fun.

As we made our way to the camp we were staying at our observations of Central Kansas and the area nearby where we’d be hunting was that it had lots of vegetation, water, and bedding areas and based on scouting cameras and conversations with others in camp the deer are flourishing.

As the hunt began we hastily built a ground blind of cedars and brush and settled in to wait for the deer that we’d hoped were bedded down in front of us to begin to migrate to both a nearby Soy Field and Oat Patch behind us. Little did we know what would unfold would be one of the most high en- ergy crazy moments in my hunting career that only video can tell the story as we had a flood of deer both does and bucks, coming out everywhere in the last few moments of daylight forcing us to quickly adapt and make moves we’d never made before to get a shot!

With all the intensity, and excitement mixed altogether it left us both speechless and I’m sure you’ll agree when you see it that we were lucky in the final moments to make it all happen in Kansas.

SNEAD STATE SEALS THE DEAL ON DARDANELLE That’s a wrap! The 2019 AFTCO Collegiate Bass Open is in the books. Lake Dardanelle presented a tough playing field thanks to constantly changing weather conditions for 350 of the top collegiate anglers in the nation. Facing a fog shortened, post front day these young anglers had their work cut out for them to catch a limit or kicker with only a few hours of fishing. As to be expected, they gave it their best effort and brought in plenty of bass to shake up the leaderboard on this final day. One team that did not slip on day two are the overall win- ners for the event, Garrett Warren and John Owens from Snead State Community College. Weighing in a total of 27.15 pounds over two days, these anglers from Alabama accomplished what they came here to do. “ We were com- ing out here to win. We wanted nothing more or less but to win. It feels awesome. It feels like a real accomplishment to finally get a win under our belt. It feels nice to finally get it done, ” said Warren. Warren’s teammate, John Owens, is just as excited about their first place finish. “ I’m just speechless. It’s just awe- some. Had a good weekend, and executed as much as we could, ” added Owens. The two anglers had control of the day one lead after weighing in 17.85 pounds. On day one, they happened into their winning spot as they fished along the bank and found a good looking piece of bank. Today their luck came in the form of one clutch bite this afternoon executed by Owens.

“ I made a clutch catch, probably about an hour ago. I flipped up a three pounder. That’s what really helped us out today, ” Owens explained. That clutch bite allowed the Snead State anglers to best second place by roughly three and a half pounds. Ending the event in second place are Luke Mason and Jus- tin Lane from the University of North Alabama. They fin- ish as runner-up with 22.69 pounds, a result that caught them both by surprise. “ It’s very surprising for us. Practice was absolutely terrible. We didn’t fish anything in the tour- nament that we practiced. And we didn’t fish anything in the tournament twice, ” Lane said. That comment pretty much summarizes their performance throughout the en- tire event. They junk fished their way to a great week here at Lake Dardanelle. “ We just junk fished. If I had to guess, ten keepers probably seven different baits or so, ” Mason added. The points earned for second place will help out the past School of the Year winners from North Alabama as they position themselves yet again for a run at the most prestigious title in college fishing.

Completing the top three is another group from the state of Alabama. The University of Alabama pairing of Jared Turn- bloom and Jake Turnbloom finish in third place with 22.69 pounds. “ It’s awesome, can’t complain about it. Should have done better, but it’s a national event. All of these guys are really really really good fishermen, can’t complain about top three, ” Jared explained. The two found one specific pattern that worked, and fished it con- sistently for both days. That consistency paid off to the tune of 11 pounds both days. “ The only place we could get bit was basically grass that grew off riprap walls up and down bridges. We would basi- cally just start and go up and down them all day. Eventually they would bite. You would go down a stretch three or four times and all of a sudden you would get five or six bites on one pass, ” said Jake. This was a great weekend here at Lake Dardanelle and Rus- sellville, AR. Although the weather threw the anglers a cur- veball, a large majority of the field put together several key bites to create an exciting and competitive event.
